Note: KILLS TWO DEER WITH ONE SHOT The Spartanburg Herald (Spartanburg, South Carolina), Dec 9, 1935, page 5 Arkadelphia, Ark. Dec. 8. Seventy years of following the hounds is the record of I.B. Leamons, 80-year-old Clark county hillsman, who can claim the feat twice of having brought down two deer with one shot. "I have killed two deer with one shot twice in my life," Leamons recalled today, "once in the night with a shotgun, and the other time with a rifle. I shot through one deer and killed another one at the same time." But the main lure of the chase to him is hearing the "music" of running hounds. "There is something in the sound of the dogs that always thrilled me more than anything else. I love singing as well as anyone, but I had rather hear the hounds in a good fox chase than any other "choir" I ever heard." Leamons comes by his love for the sport naturally. His father, born in the Indian territory, learned to hunt with the Redskins and hunted to the last days of his life. "I was with my father when he killed five deer in one night," Leamons declared, "and I helped him butcher seven that he killed in a day." Doing most of his hunting in Clark county, Leamons admitted he can't claim such a record as that of his father. But he has bagged four deer in one day and three in a night. In his 70 years at the sport, he has brought down as many as 50 or 60 fox and nearly an equal number of bobcats, he recalled today. Leamons unusual record brought commendation several weeks ago from Governor J. Marion Futrell, who attended the Arkansas Fox Association's annual meeting. According to his grandaughter, Ena Leamons Selph, Isaac never drank anything stronger than hot water. He was a lay preacher in the local Church of Christ. He didn't like automobiles and would walk the 16 miles from his home outside of Gurdon to Arkadelphia. She remembered an account of how when one of his children was born someone ran to the river and shouted the news to him as he was floating logs downstream to market. Walter Wallace Leamons stayed with the family when he would preach in their church. The last time she saw Wallace was in 1929. Joshua carried Indians from Louisiana out West to Oklahoma. He had a sister in Louisiana that passed away. (From an interview with Ena by Michael Leamons in 1982 on a visit to her home outside of Gurdon.)
