a. Note:   rs of four Baptist churches have joined together to establish a scholarship at Louisiana College in memory of Dr. Sidney Reginald Young, according to Glyn Vercher, director of Planned Giving at Louisiana College. Young, a native of Lisbon and a graduate of Louisiana College, passed away earlier this year. He was pastor of First Baptist Church in Paris at the time of his death. Rocky Springs Baptist Church in Lisbon established the "Dr. Sidney Young Memorial Scholarship Fund" with the assistance of First Baptist Church of Natchitoch.es, First Baptist Church of Holly Springs; Miss., and First Baptist Church of Paris. The scholarship will be given to students preparing for ministry or missions. The youngest of six children, Young was born to Reginald D. and Mamie Ruth Lowrey Young on Dec. 3, 1951, in Homer. He was reared in the family home to which his grandparents, Pa and Ma Young, moved in 1918. According to Young's widow, Debra Kay Sikes Young, the family home still belongs to the family and was a place of great endearment to Young. Reared in a Christian home, Young's home church was Rocky Spring Baptist Church. He made his profession of faith at this church, surrendered to the ministry and was ordained there. His greatgrandfather, Charles Davis Young, was a Baptist preacher, and his grandfather, Pa Young, traveled with Charles, leading music and teaching singing schools. His father was an ordained deacon at Rocky Springs and served there faithfully his entire life. His mother was devoted to God, the church and her family and taught the Faithful Workers Sunday School class until her death in 1978. Young graduated from Lisbon High School in 1969, and his brother Stephen felt privileged to have been his English teacher at LHS, according to Mrs. Young. During the summer of '69, Young met his future bride while serving on staff at Glorieta Baptist Assembly. Mrs. Young, a native of Baskin, says their romance blossomed on the campus of Louisiana College, and the two were married in December 1971. When they graduated in 1973, Young had earned an English degree and Mrs. Young received a music degree. Young earned his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth in 1976 and his Doctor of Ministry degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1979. Following God's leadership, Young became pastor at Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church in Doyline in 1973. In 1976, he moved to Heflin to pastor Heflin Baptist Church. His pastoral duties extended to First Baptist Church of Converse in 1978, First Baptist Church of Oak Grove in 1980, First Baptist Church of Covington in 1984, First Baptist Church of Hayriesville in 1988, Raleigh Baptist Church of Memphis, Tenn., in 1991 and First Baptist Church in Paris in 1995.. He was also a former presi- dent (1987-88) of the Executive Board of the Louisiana Baptist Convention, of which he was a member from 1983-84 and 198588. He served as first vice-president of the Louisiana Baptist Convention from 1989-90 and on the Board of Trustees, of Louisiana College in 1991. He was elected to the Executive Board of the State Missions Commission of the Baptist .General Convention of Texas shortly before his death. Young and his wife had two sons, Andrew Reginald Young, a senior at the University of North Texas at Denton, and Matthew Lowrey Young, a junior at Paris High School. "Sid loved his God, his church, his family, and God's creation with all that he had," said Stephen Young, "and he served the Lord in a mighty way during his lifetime." According to Vercher, the scholarship in Young's memory will be awarded for the first time during 2000. Interested individuals may donate toward the endowment of the scholarship in memory of Young. "The churches have selected to leave this scholarship open so that the friends of Sid Young may contribute to this memorial," said Vercher. "Dr. Young was such a devoted pastor and family man that this scholarship is an appropriate tribute to him. Through this scholarship, many students preparing for the ministry will be blessed in their work." Anyone interested in contributing to the scholarship should contact Vercher at 318487-7319.
