Note: lbert was born to C.B. and Martha Hohle on March 22, 1929 in The Grove. He was baptized into the faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in The Grove on March 29, 1929. Gilbert loved scholarship and learning. He attended elementary school at St. Paul. He was confirmed as a young man on Sunday, March 29, 1942. As a teenager he attended Moody High School, but ventured out of Texas to attend Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska where he obtained his Lutheran Teacher’ s Diploma. Gilbert returned to Texas In 1953, accepting his first call to teach at St. Paul Lutheran School in Vernon, TX. It was in Vernon he met and married Mary Francis Gaines on June 20, 1954. In 1955 he accepted his second call to teach at St. Paul Lutheran School in Thorndale, TX. Gilbert served as a teacher for 17 years, and after leaving the teaching ministry he served faithfully at McLane Industries for 23 years. Some remember Gilbert as a school teacher and others remember him for his expertise in the McLane candy room—but he was so much more. While he lived humbly, he always longed for the higher things in life. Gilbert had cultured tastes and was well-read on many subjects. His family will remember him as a scholar, philosopher, musician, singer, craftsman, inventor, collector, and even as a chef. Most importantly, he will be remembered as a loving patriarch to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Edith Winkler, and his brother Charles (Charlie). In their old age, he lovingly served as a caregiver for his parents. He was a generous donor to numerous charities. He is survived by his sister Lydia Winkler of The Grove, brother Elmer of Liberty Hill and his former wife Francis Bisson of Nolanville. All five of Gilbert’s children survive him--Kathy (Travis) Smith of Austin, Philip (Gwen) Hohle of Cedar Park, Lawanda (Russ) Filyaw of Taylor, Mark Hohle of The Grove, and Michael (Debbie) Hohle of Moody. In addition, he will be missed by his 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Viewing is Friday, November 25, 2016, 5-7 p.m. at Hewett-Arney Funeral Home, 14 W.
