Note: d as our Levi Holder. I am unaware of the existence of any photograph of our Levi Holder. Note: In 1850 Levi and his family lived with his wife's mother, Jemina Lemons, and some of her children. Prior to 1856 Levi and his family moved to Morganville, Hopkins, Texas. Married: 27 MAR 1843 in Union, AR, USA Note: Levi and Emily were residents of Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, and were married in Union County, Arkansas. 1860 Beat 1, Hopkins, TX (Roll: M653_1297; pg. 137) Levi married again Jan 29, 1874, Hopkins County, Texas to Setha Ann Harrell. Vol 14, page 57. PROP: 18 AUG 1863 , Hopkins, TX (67 acres) District: Lamar; Nacogdoches, Paschall; File: 212, Patent # 149, Patent Vol: 17; Class: Lamar Scrip (from AMAKERNY rootsweb tree by April Wharton Makerney) Notes for LEVI HOLDER: Holder, Levi H: Pvt. Co. A 28th (Gray's) LA Inf. enlisted May 8, 1862, Monroe, La. On Prisoners of War, Paroled at Natchitoes LA June 15, 1865. Resident Bienville Parish LA (from Records of Louisiana Confederate Soldiers, Volume III Book) (from Sheila Johnson's notes) Composed by Mary Urban 2 May 2008:Jesse Holder, b abt 1785 in Virginia; died abt Nov 1863 in Bienville Parish, Louisiana; md maybe a Miss Garrison in Warren Co. KY. Don Holder of Corpus Christi, TX submitted DNA for this line. The following was compiled by Mary Urban, with Don’s input. [Don’s DNA for Jesse and and Mary’s male cousin’s DNA for Bledsoe are exact matches over 37 markers, so we have been trying to figure out how they are related.] Jesse apparently moved from Virginia to Warren Co. KY about 1804; his older children report being born there about 1805-1813. So I'm thinking he is most likely a son of the William Holder who was in that area at that time, and his first wife who had raised their family in Fauquier Co. VA. William Holder appears in the 1804 Warren Co. KY Tax List, and Jesse appears in 1806, so I'm thinking that was the year he turned 21, and had his own household and so is counted separate from William. No marriage record has been found for him, but it has been assumed by some Holder researchers that her name was Garrison, based on the name of son Elisha Garrison Holder. There were Garrisons in Warren Co. in that time period. They owned land on Bays Fork, as did William Holder, so there is a definite possibility of a marriage to a Garrison. 1810 can't find him but think he was still in Warren Co. as Elisha Garrison was reportedly born there in abt 1813-1815. 1820 can't find, but he might have been in IL, since son Jesse P. reported being born in IL in 1818. Greene Co. would be my best bet, since Bradley Holder [also from Warren Co. KY] was there in 1830 before moving down into Arkansas. I think Bradley is either a brother or a cousin to Jesse. [Also many of the family of James Garrison Sr. migrated from Warren/Barren Co. KY into IL, some into Greene Co.] Elisha G. Holder biographical article in Vol I p 258 of Bienville Parish History states that Elisha was born in 1815 in Warren Co. KY and at the age of tweve came with his brothers Jesse, William and Levi to Minden. [That would be abt 1827] 1830 Claiborne Parish LA census (p 24) lists Jesse Holder 40-50, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30; and female 50-60, 1 female 10-15 and 2 15-20. Next door was a William Holder 20-30 that I think is probably their older already-married son. He and his wife (also 20-30) had 1 male under 5. Neighbors included Brown and Walker families, James Hamilton, and Abraham Lemons [sic]. Can't find any Jordan or Jourdan family in this area at that time. 1839 Jesse and Elisha patented 40 acres of land in SE of NE 6-16-5, according to Jocia Singleton and Grace McCasland who wrote the biography of Elisha G. for the Bienville Parish LA history. (see p 258) We can’t tell if this refers to the father Jesse or to the son Jesse. 1840 Claiborne Parish LA census (p 94) shows Jesse Holder 50-60, with 3 males 10-15, 1 15-20, 1 20-30; 1 female 50-60 and 1 20-30 and 1 female 80-90. Who is this oldest female? It looks like Jesse and his wife had at least 7 children (4 sons and 3 daus)--and that in 1840 there may have been 3 young grandsons living with them, perhaps children of the 20-30 year old female? On the next page is Jesse P. Holder 20-30 with wife and dau under 5. 1850 Bienville Parish LA census (p 281 house #457) lists Jesse Holder 60 VA "farmer. Also in the home was John Tilley 46 GA; Sarah 46 GA; William 17 GA; Milissa 16 GA; Martha 14 GA; and Abner 13 GA. I think Jesse is really abt 6 years older than this. Nearby presumed son Levi and family are living with Levi's mother-in-law Jemima Leamons age 59 of Kentucky. Some people have concluded that Sarah Tilley is a daughter to Jesse, but an experienced Tilley researcher, Gail Blancett, has ruled that out. My theory is that Jesse needed help with his farming operations, so had this family living there with him. John Tilley is also listed as "farmer". 1860 census not available for Bienville Parish L Jesse’s estate was handled by William Holder in Nov 1863. These are believed to be his children, based on census and locality: 1- William Pryor Holder b abt 1805 Warren Co. KY; d 26 Dec 1874 Bienville Par. LA; md Emily abt 1828 2- Levi Holder b abt 1807 Warren Co. KY; d bef 1870 Hopkins Co. TX; md Elizabeth E. Leamons 1843 [I think he may have had a previous wife and some children that his father Jesse may have raised, as the extra males in 1840 household aren’t Jesse’s.] 3- Dau b abt 1809 Warren Co. KY; don’t know if she died or married 4- Dau b abt 1811 Warren Co. KY; don’t know if she died or married 5- Elisha Garrison Holder b abt 1813-15 Warren Co. KY; d aft 1887 in Bastrop Co. TX; md Mary Neal in 1840 [this is Don’s line] 6- Mary Holder b abt 1815; d aft 1855 LA; md Isaac Anders abt 1841 [no state of birth given in 1850] 7- Jesse P. Holder b abt 1818 Illinois; d 1899 Milam Co TX; md Elizabeth abt 1838 and Florida Nov 1875. There is another Jesse P. Holder, who was born Mar 1829 in Claiborne Par. LA; died 1920 in DeSota Par. LA; md Eliza Jane Cawley in abt 1857, whose descendant, Ken Holder, believes was a son of the elder Jesse Holder. My theory is that he is a grandson of this older Jesse, and was mostly raised by him, and so considered him “dad”, even though there was the other Jesse P. b in 1818 that seems to be a son. This makes me suspect that maybe Levi was married prior to his marriage to Elizabeth Leamons, when he would have been about 36. He would have been old enough to father a child in 1829, at age 22. Obviously more research needed J Ken Holder has sent a DNA kit for testing, which should be posted sometime soon. I sure would like to have someone tested from the line of Jesse P. b 1818 and from the line of William Pryor!
Note: There is a second Levi Holder born about 1806 whose picture is often incorrectly represente
