Note: DEATH OF SISTER McCLUNG. Sister Martha I. McClung, wife of Elder J. F. McClung, died very suddenly September 30, 1911, at 5:27 o'clock p.m. She was married to Elder J. F. McClung September 7, 1875. To this happy union were born twelve children---seven girls and five boys---one son and one daughter having preceded her to the glory world. Annie Woodward McClung departed this life during Brother McClung's pastorate at Queen City, where Annie's body sweetly rests awaiting the resurrection of the just. J. F. McClung, Jr., sleeps quietly within the city of our dead, where the remains of his dear mother was laid to rest Monday, October 2, among many blinding tears of friends and kindred. Sister McClung professed a hope in Jesus Christ July, 1871, and was baptized into the fellowship of the Missionary Baptist Church at Three Creeks, Ark., by Elder J. M. Hart, where she has lived faithful to her profession and to her church up to the day of her death. Her funeral services were held in the First Baptist Church by her pastor and Dr. Hayden, of Dallas, a life-long friend of the deceased and family. The services were witnessed by an overflowing house of sympathizing friends and the sorrowing relatives. Text of Scripture used, Rev. 14:13, "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; yea, saith the Spirit, they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them." In discoursing on this Scripture it was remarked that her works would live on and on, in the life of husband, sons and daughters. Her life was one great lesson of faithfulness, in the home as companion, as mother, as servant of her Master, ever loyal and true to that which she believed to be right. She has given, in her life, lessons that will be like pebbles cast into placid waters, whose wavelets touch the farther shore. In these noble lessons may we join the bereaved ones in keeping and practicing them in our home and every-day life. The pall-bearers were selected by Brother McClung, to-wit: Elders D. T. Murdock, W. D. Brown, Dr. S. A. Hayden, W. T. Gray, W. B. Logan and J. S. Elliott, whose patient hands lovingly and tenderly laid her sleeping dust to rest to await the summons from on high. For the Children. "There lives and dwells in mansions far beyond the ken of erring mortals, A soul whose virtue, like a star resplendent, shine beyond their portals; A soul so loving, kind and fair---to you more dear than every other--- Who blest you with her latest prayer, and answered to the name of Mother. The sons and daughters of our race can never know, till death has taken The Mother from their fond embrace, how great the loss or how forsaken. She molds the mind for cares of state, she teaches man to love his brother, And through the greatest of the great she still remains a loving Mother. If aught of truth our lives have shown, or aught of manhood's high endeavor, We owe it to that angel one, who gave us life and loved us ever. She left her sons and daughters all a life whose years surpassed each other In all the noble traits that fall upon the sacred name of Mother. Pile to the clouds the stones of fame for heroes who will live in story, And grave on each the honored names of those who fill the cup of glory; But higher still, and brighter far, a name will shine over every other--- That dearest, sweetest monitor---our dearest sun-crowned name of Mother." HER PASTOR Echo copy. Hughes Spring, Texas, Oct. 2, 1911. B. M. A. News, Dallas, Texas: The messengers of Salem Baptist Association, in session at Oak Ridge, Cass County, were shocked on last Sunday morning when the announcement was made that the wife of Elder J. F. McClung had died suddenly at their home at Italy, Texas, while her husband was in attendance at the session of that body. Brother McClung had preached an able sermon at the church on Friday night, not knowing that his beloved companion was then in the shadow of death at their home. In token of our sympathy for the bereaved husband and family, the following resolution was passed and telegram directed to be sent to him. JAS. A. SHADDIX Hughes Spring, Texas. The sad messages comes to Salem Association of the death of the beloved wife of our brother, Elder J. F. McClung, who was present in attendance on the session of this body. Resolved, That this association extend to the bereaved husband and family our sincere sympathy, and pray God's blessings on Brother McClung and the dear children, commending them to our good Father's care. (Signed) J. D. STRINGER The following telegram was ordered sent: To J. F. McClung, Italy, Texas: Salem Association and visitors extend deepest sympathy in this sad hour. Romans 8:28. (Signed) J. D. STRINGER The above adopted by unanimous vote. JAS. A. SHADDIX, Moderator. W. A. CALLAWAY, Clerk. (Texas Baptist-Herald?) from a publication of The Baptist Missionary Association of Texas, Vol. V, Number 24, Dallas, Texas, Oct. 15, 1911. Cover photo of J. F. and Mattie Leamons McClung. MRS. J. F. McCLUNG DECEASED. The subject of this sketch, whose likewise(likeness?) appears above, whose maiden name was Mattie Isabella Leamons, first saw the light of day at Three Creeks, Union County, Arkansas, April 2nd, 1856; converted and joined the Baptist Church at the age of fifteen. The venerable man that baptized her still lives---J. M. Hart, Weatherford, Texas. The 7th of September, 1875, she was married to J. F. McClung. To this union was born 12 children, 7 girls and 5 boys, two of whom preceded her to the glory world. At her post of duty, caring for her household and serving her Lord, as gathered the twilight, Saturday, September 30th, 1911, the summons came to her without any warning. Just as she was stooping to milk the cow, she staggered back and fell into the arms of Rexford, her son, while the windows of her earthly house was thrown open, and the uncaged, heavenly dove took her flight to the world beyond. Now, what was she as I, her pastor for two years, knew her? A citizen without sycophancy, treachery or hate; a neighbor without neglect, bickering or backbiting; a woman of wisdom; a mother without murmering; a wife without twaddle, wichery or words; a Christian of courage; to duty devoted; plain, unassuming, kind-hearted and true. A rose whose fragrance has been on many breezes borne, an evergreen tree in an heavenly land. J. S. ELLIOTT. Name: Mattie I.
