Notes for ESSEX EBAR: The name Ebert is spelled in various ways within this family: Ebar, Ebare. It was originally Hebert. Essex's father and his father spelled their name Hebert; however, some documents have it spelled both Hebert and Ebare. Rachel Ann (called Annie), told her children she was about ten years old when her father, Essex, died. They were living in Rapides Parish at the time, and she said he was buried on the banks of the Red River. Her children said she used to say occasionally that she wondered if his body had not probably washed into the river already. Annie told that after her father died, her mother, Emily, and the children walked back to Bienville Parish where Emily's family lived. All that Annie's children knew about her father was that he was French and from south Louisiana, but they did not know from what parish. After much searching, I found Essex with his parents and two brothers in the 1850 Natchitoches Parish, La. U.S. census. The last name was spelled "Ebar". His parents were Francois, age 50, and Sara, age 46. Essex's age was shown as 2. He had two brothers listed in the census. They were James, age 4, and Benjamin, age 1. According to the census, all the children were born in LA and their parents were born in Mississippi. See information about his parents. In the 1870 Bienville Parish, LA U.S. Census, Essex and his family were enumerated in Ward 1, Post Office Arcadia at Dwelling No./Family No. 400. His occupation was listed as that of a farmer. He could not read or write, but he was eligible to vote. He was not shown to have any property in this census. His parents were enumerated in the same ward and with the same post office at Dwelling No./Family No. 397, and his brother, Benjamin and his wife were enumerated in the same ward and with the same post office at Dwelling No./Family No. 398. In the Bienville Parish Conveyance Records, in Vol. K, Page 93, in 1874, Essex Hebert bought property from J.H. Schoen. In Vol. K, Page 305, in 1875, Essex sold property to J.W. Brown. In Vol. L, Page 384, in 1880, Ben Ebar bought property from Essex Hebert. (Need to check all of these conveyance records.) Essex died of pneumonia according to Emily E. Ebert's Civil War pension application. (Above information from Sharon Johnson) Census: 1880 US Census, Winn Parish, Louisiana (pp. 41-60) Page No. 44, Ward 8. 380.381.
