a. Note:   sident and former Ridgecrest resident J. D. "Smokey" Freeman died on Sunday, Dec. 30 at his residence in Onyx. He was 79. A funeral will be held on Wednesday, Jan 2, at 1 pm at Holland & Lyons Chapel in Ridgecrest. Reverend Bill Lewis of the Weldon Southern Baptist Church will officiate. Private burial will take place at Desert Memorial Park in Ridgecrest. Mr. Freeman was born Dec. 24, 1922, in Giles County, Tenn. He resided in Ridgecrest from 1949 to 1980. He owned Smokey's Garage and Auto Parts. He retired as an auto mechanic in 1982. He served with the U.S. Army in World War II. He is survived by his wife, Louise C. Freeman of Onyx; son James David Freeman of Lake Isabella, daughters Judith Anna Pullin of Norco, Linda Louise Malear of Lake Isabella and Lola Francis Edwards of Onyx; mother A. D. Freeman of Pine Grove; 11 grand children and 14 great grand children. Holland & Lyons is assisting the family with arrangements. News Review Ridgecrest Ca. January 9, 2002 J. D. (Smokey) Freeman J. An auto mechanic, he owned Smokey's Garage and Auto Parts and the Bar S Motel. He retired as an auto mechanic in 1982. He is survived by his wife, Louise C. Freeman of Onyx; son, James David Freeman of Lake Isabella; daughters, Judith Anna Pullin of Norco, Linda Louise Malear of Lake Isabella and Lola Francis Edwards of Onyx; brother, A. D. Freeman of Pine Grove; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. Interment was at Desert Memorial Park. Arrangements were provided by Holland & Lyons Mortuary. Note: One obit refers to A. D. Freeman as his mother and the other obit refers to A. D. Freeman as his brother.
