Death: Sep. 14, 2010 Texas, USA
Joe Murray Clonts, age 82, passed away September 14, 2010. Born September 1, 1928, Joe Murray lived most of his life in Knox City, Texas, devoting himself to his loving wife and children. One week after the tornado struck Knox City, he married Margie Lowrey on March 20, 1953, and enjoyed 55 wonderful years of marriage. Nicknamed "Mr. Methodist," he was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. The church called on him for tasks great and small from chairing the Administrative Board to teaching Sunday School; serving on the Finance Committee or capturing an errant bat in the building. Joe was Knox City's resident "Pie Man," providing buttermilk and pecan pies for church dinners, families in need, and the prison ministry. An Eagle Scout, a Scoutmaster, and Silver Beaver Award recipient, his Boy Scout involvement provided him with principles he followed throughout his life. Active in his community, Joe was a longtime member of the Freemasons and the Lions Club. He served as President of the North Central Texas Municipal Water Authority. He was named recipient of the E. Hob Smith Most Appreciated Citizen award. A 1949 engineering graduate of Texas A&M University, he proudly wore his smooth Aggie ring. After graduation, he continued in his father's business -Clonts Hardware and Furniture- until his retirement in 1990. His popularity as a gunsmith brought people from all over the Big Country to the store. After his retirement, he delivered mail for Knox City. He loved his wife Margie and his children Diane and Mark and their families, his truck, and his dog, Luke. Joe is preceded in death by his loving wife, Margie, his parents, Eugene and Dovie Clonts, and his sister, Doris Elaine Clonts Gunn. He is survived by his daughter and spouse, Diane and Burton Balch of Katy, Texas; his son and spouse, Mark and Lillian Clonts of Dripping Springs, Texas; his brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Pat Clonts; his grandson and spouse William and Kristen Balch; grandson Martin Balch; sister-in-law Wynell Wadzeck; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Buster and Dottie Lowrey, Sammy and June Tankersley, Charles and Faye Reed; along with many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 6 at Smith Funeral Home in Knox City, Thursday evening. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 17, at First United Methodist Church in Knox City at 2:00 p.m. Published in Abilene Reporter-News from September 15 to September 16, 2010
