T. Seals, daughter) PENNINGTONS By Melvina Pennington Doctor William Henry Pennington and wife Martha (Donald) moved from Justin to Mineral Wells to retire in 1911. He practiced medicine in Denton County a number of years. The Doctor invested in “The Crazy Water Works” in Mineral Wells. Later, he acquired three tracts of land, one of them being at Kyle mountain north of Palo Pinto. A cousin moved from Justin to the ranch house at Kyle to help run the ranch. It was on December 15, 1915 that William Robert (Bob) and Lena (Lewis) Pennington moved to Palo Pinto with their two small children, Chester and Willie Mae. While living here six more children were born: John L., Donald, Paul, Louise, Winston Ray (Dub) and Frank. Dr. Smith at Palo Pinto was contacted when it was time for John to be born. He cranked his car to come, it kicked and broke his arm. Another doctor had to be called. After John was grown, he’d see him and say, “That’s the old boy that broke my arm.” The washing was done at a tank or spring. Drinking water was caught in a cistern or hauled and put in. Bob also had pastures on Rockie Prairie and Dodson Prairie, all tended by horseback. During this time, Palo Pint County had a drive to clean up the fever ticks. Everyone owning cattle had to bring them to an appointed dipping vat. You came the time they set regardless of the weather. Bob and the man with him herded cattle across the old Dark Valley swinging bridge. Shortly after they had crossed, a truck started across; the bridge collapsed, causing the truck to fall and a man was killed. Lena could shoot a rattlesnake’s head off with a pistol. The children were told not to play under the ranch house. They did and Lena found them with a rattlesnake in a coffee can. She had a spanking session at that time. Willie Mae and Chester were riding a horse home from school with Chester behind holding on to the D-rings. Lightning struck shocking Chester, causing him to fall from the horse. It was three days before he was aware of what was going on around him. The Bob Penningtons moved back to Justin on November 1928. She died in 1967; he in 1975. Doctor Pennington had died in 1940. Chester and Alice (Seals) Pennington moved to the Kyle Ranch in 1938. The old ranch house was torn down and a new one built. While living there, Dr. Smith was called to deliver a daughter, Glenna Lou. The lived there until June 1947, then moved into Palo Pinto. Alice died in November 1964. June 19, 1947, John L. and Melvena (Moon) Pennington moved to the ranch at Kyle. Two children were born, Carol and William Ray. John and Melvena still live at Kyle where he was born. Carol married Barry Holmes, a Methodist minister. They live in Mineral Wells and have two daughters, Melinda and Sheila. Ray married Nita Pilgrim, is a carpenter and lives in Gordon. Chester married Lois (Smith) Schoolcraft; they live in Palo Pinto where he still ranches. Glenna married James Picard. They live in Palo Pinto and have two children, Wesley and Alice. He ranches and works with gas production. Louise (Pennington) Simmons’ daughter, Vickie married a Mineral Wells boy. R. B. Dill, Jr. They live in Mineral Wells and have a daughter, Rhonda. He works for Perry Equipment. (The above was published in a history of Palo Pinto County, Texas and includes a photo of Bob and Lena Pennington as well as a photo of 4 of the children.
