Mrs. Mollie Lowry Shuping (b. 1853- d. 1931), her son, Virgel (b. May 28, 1891), and her daughter, Myrtle Shuping (Buell), left Rockwall, Texas, by train for Oklahoma Territory in 1906. Mrs. Shuping’s daughter, Clara, and her husband, George Nash, had come to Oklahoma Territory in 1901 from Rockwall, Texas. The town was Farmersville, two miles north of where Tipton is now. Mr. Nash met them at Frederick.
A few days later, Clara Nash wash shopping in Frederick, and she met Luther Lowry. In visiting with Mr. Lowry, she discovered that Mrs. Mollie Lowry Shuping and Mr. Lowry’s father, Isaac, were brother and sister and had not seen each other for thirty years. The following Sunday, the Lowrys loaded up the wagon and went to visit their new friends. Neither Luther Lowry nor George Nash told their families what the visit was for. It was a very happy surprise for Ms. Shuping and the family.
Virgel Shuping was sent to Camp Bowie at Fort Worth, Texas, for training in World War I. There he met Hattie Lewis (b. July 25, 1894). After serving his country in France, he was discharged.
He and Miss Lewis were married in October, 1919. They moved to Forgan, Oklahoma, and farmed. A son, Herman Lloyd, was born October 13, 1921. The family moved to Tipton in 1923, where Mr. Shuping worked for a gin and farmed. A daughter, Helen, was born April 11, 1924. A son, R.V. Jr., was born January 7, 1926.
In 1941, the Shuping family moved to Planada, California.
Lloyd served in the Air Force in World War II. He married Doris Kimbro, and they had four children, Herman Lloyd Jr., Rodney, John, and Nancy.
R.V. Jr. served in the Army in World War II. He married Helen Joyce, Cordia Handlin’s daughter, and they had two children, Susie and Mark.
Helen Shuping married Claud Pilcher. They had one daughter, Patty Pilcher Turner.
A Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary celebration was planned for Mr. and Mrs. Virgel Shuping in October, 1969. Mrs. Shuping became ill and was hospitalized three days before the celebration. So many relatives and friends came from other states that the celebration was held in the hospital. Mrs. Shuping was hospitalized until her death on April 16, 1970.
Mr. Shuping was so heartbroken over the loss of his wife, Hattie, that he lived just one year, one month, and three days after her death. He died on May 19, 1971. He and Hattie are buried at the Plainbury Cemetery in Merced, California.
Mr. and Mrs. R. V. Shuping had seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
