Rites for Tom McWhirter, Ex-Commissioner, Set Today
Funeral for Tom McWhiter, 72, former city commissioner, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Kiker-Warren Funeral Chapel. Mr. McWhirter died at 12:05 p.m. Monday at his home, 1634 South 12th St.
Conducting services will be the Rev. H. Leland Murphy, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church and the Rev. Willis P. Gerhart, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Born in Italy, Ellis County, on March 15, 1882, Mr. McWhirter served as Ellis County Commissioner from 1912-1922. He moved to Abilene in 1922. For 25 years, he was the Texas representative of Austin-Western Road Machinery Co. Mr. McWhirter began work in road and bridge construction when he was 18. In 1942, he was elected city commissioner and served in that position for four years. He had charge of the street, lights and airport departments.
Mr. McWhirter was a candidate for Taylor County Commissioner in 1948. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Victory Men's Bible Class and the Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife; his son, T.N. (Jim) McWhirter of Midland, and two grandchildren. Pallbearers will be L. A. Grimes, Houston Day, Raymond Day, Willard Jones, Jim Greely and A. J. Stevenson.
