They entered the service June 24, 1941 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Basic training took place in San Diego, California. They sailed from San Diego January 6, 1942 on the Monterey. They arrived at Pago Pago, America Somoa on January 20,1942. They headed for Guadalcanal October 24, 1942 and arrived there November 3, 1942. On November 4, 1942 they landed on the Hunter Liggett, a merchant marine ship. Jim Crow ordered James to scout and he was injured in the battle of Kokumbora River January 16, 1943. Captain Miller was the commanding officer. Lt. Starr was the platoon leader. They left February 9, 1943 on the Hunter Liggett and went to Wellington, New Zealand (Camp Paekakariki) arriving six or seven days later. James was at Silver Stream Hospital, 12 miles from Wellington, New Zealand. He left New Zealand around June 20, 1943 and landed in San Francisco on July 3, 1943. The regiment retrained in New Zealand then went to Tarawa where John Roy was injured about three days after arrival. A retired plumber and pipe fitter, he was a native of Kiowa county, Oklahoma, and a Borger resident for 56 years. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Marine Corps and a member of First Baptist Church and Disabled American Veterans.He is survived by his wife, Wanda; two sons, John of Oceanside, Calif., and James Dale of Harrison, Ark.;one daughter, Cynthia Kasko of Borger; one brother, Denzel of West Covina, Calif.; five granshildren.Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Miller, pastor, and Rev. Jerry Evans, associate pastor, officating.Burial will be at Highland Park Cemetery under the direction of Ed Brown & Sons Funeral Home.
