Note: HARBERT -- Willie Smith, 74, of Harbert died Sunday morning, Sept. 16, 2001, in Galien. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pobocik Funeral Home Connelly-Noble Chapel, Three Oaks, with the Rev. Arthur McCrum officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, Lakeside, Mich. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Chikaming Township Ambulance Association. Mr. Smith was born Oct. 7, 1926, in Prescott, Ark., to Jack and Audie (Hickey) Smith. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the South Eastern Pacific Theater. On Feb. 26, 1949, in Three Oaks, he married Cordelia DeMorrow. She preceded him in death on July 7, 1997. Mr. Smith was employed by the Berrien County Road Commission, retiring after 33 years of service. For the past 15 years, he was an emergency vehicle driver for the Chikaming Township Ambulance and was a part-time employee with the Chikaming Township Water Department. Mr. Smith enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include his children, Curtis (Joyce) Smith of New Troy, Beverly (Steve) Steinhaus of Coloma, Dennis (Beverly) Smith of Berrien Springs, Edward (Debbie) Smith of Three Oaks, and Alton (Tonda) Smith of Bridgman; grandchildren -- Alyshea, Holly, Alison, Brian, Tony, Rob, Kandis, Cindy, Sharon, Sarah, Dustin and Jason; great-grandchildren -- Derek and Lexi; sisters -- Mary Freyer of New Troy, Velma Green of Michigan City, Ind., and Hazel Winnie of Florida; his brother, James Smith of Prescott, Ark.; and his companion and caregiver, Virginia Smith of Galien. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Bruce; sister, Lucy; and grandson, Rusty. (from the Herald-Palladium, Sept 17, 2001)
