Notes
a. Note:   Notes for CHARLIE ALVIN MORSE: Charlie was born near Haynesville, Louisiana. When he was almost seven years old, his family moved to West Carroll Parish, Louisiana from Shongaloo in Webster Parish, Louisiana and stayed four or five years. Then they moved to Emerson in Columbia County, Arkansas and stayed two or three months and then moved back to West Carroll Parish, Louisiana and remained there where his family farmed for a living.
When Charlie was nineteen years old, he joined the U S Marine Corps. (See fact sheet.) At time of discharge he had the rank of Corporal which he attained April 20, 1942. His special military qualifications were a rifleman and a drill instructor. He served in the Pacific area from June 6, 1942 until March 28, 1943. He was awarded the Good Conduct medal July 20, 1943. (This information, along with that on the fact sheet regarding his service record, was obtained from his discharge papers.)
Upon his discharge from service in 1946, he returned to Oak Grove in West Carroll Parish, Louisiana where his wife and two young daughters were waiting.
He tried farming as a way of making a living for a few years. Then in the fall of 1953 he began working with a bridge construction company. He did this type work, except for a few months in 1957 when he tried selling Fuller Brush products. He was not successful at this and he returned to the bridge construction company , Spohrer Construction.
When he first began bridge construction work, he worked for a company named Spohrer and Pollard; he worked away from home near Gonzales in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, and returned home on the weekends for the first few months. Then in February 1954 he moved his family to Gonzales where they lived until school was out, at which time he moved his family to Denham Springs in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. When school was out in May 1955 he moved his family to Monroe in Ouachita Parish. Some time during that summer, the family moved to West Monroe which was just across the Ouachita River from Monroe in Ouachita Parish. In late winter of 1956 he and his family moved again, this time to Hammond in Tangipahoa Parish where his family lived until November of that year, at which time they moved to DeRidder in Beauregard Parish.
About the time school was out in 1957 Charlie stopped working with Spohrer Construction Co. and he moved his family to Shreveport in Caddo Parish where he tried his hand at being a salesman. He sold Fuller Brush products until about November of that year. However, he was not a salesman; so he went back to work with Spohrer Construction Co. building bridges again. His family moved to Hodge in Jackson Parish.
His wife and three daughters lived at Hodge until school was out that year, 1958; then they moved to Hammond in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana where they lived and put down some roots. Two of his daughters married and lived there for many years.
In 1970, Charlie retired with a disability due to severe rheumatoid arthritis, and he and Marie moved to New Mexico to see if the climate there would be better for his condition. (from Sheila Johnson notes)
