Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro Mr. W. L. Ponder, age 81 of Hodge, died at his residence Tuesday, September 7, 2010 following a lengthy illness. Mr. Ponder was a member of North Hodge Assembly of God and faithfully served as a deacon for many years. He also served many years as Fire Chief for Hodge and was a retired master plumber. Friends may visit with the family 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at the North Hodge Assembly of God Church. Funeral services will be held at the church 10:00 AM Thursday with Reverend Geary Phillips and Reverend Gene Cumpton officiating. Interment will be at Springhill Cemetery near Jonesboro. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Colleen Rieson Ponder of Hodge; sons, Benny Ponder and wife Margie of Stonewall, David Ponder and wife Susan of Everett, WA; daughter, Janis Murphy and husband Mike of Quitman; grandchildren, Danny Ponder, Tim Murphy, Jacob Ponder, Brian Murphy, Jared Ponder, Shannon Goss, Kelly Wooten; great-grandchildren, Lex, Eli, Jaron, Azlynn, Chloe, Lane, Emme, Josey; brothers, James Ponder, T. L. Ponder, Phillip Ponder, Marvin Ponder, all of San Agustine, TX; sisters, Bobbie Walton of Center, TX, Vonnie Stover of Jacksonville, TX, Phyllis Andrews of Evadale, TX, Mary Lou Stringer of Frankston, TX, Kay Dickson of Troup, TX; brother-in-law, Clifton Rieson of Dodson; sister-in-law, Nell McDaniel of Jonesboro; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Ponder was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Mattie Lou Ponder; son, Daniel Ponder; brothers, Jack Ponder and Elvin Ponder.
