Note: John A. Johnson enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private in 1863, and served at that rank until his discharge when the conflict ended. There are records which inicate John Johnson was a member of the "wagon train" which left Clarksville, Arkansas in Apr of 1848, bound for the California Gold fields. Family tradition tells that John A. was a single man of about 27 or 28 at the time. The story goes that he "struck it rich" and returned by way of ship, to New Orleans, LA. where he invested his gold in several slaves, which he brought back up-river to Arkansas. If John truly struck it rich, his good fortune was only a temproary situation; as he lost his California earnings when the slaves were freed in 1863 by President Lincoln. Mary Lee's husband, John Johnson was the only member of the William and Dicey Lee's immediate family to serve in the Confederate Army, all the other served the Union.
