Notes
a. Note:   Per Britton's sister Violeeta: There was an accident when Britton was about 12 or 13. He took a shotgun out to shoot a rabbit with his friend Doyle Boyd. It had been raining and Britt slipped when they were going through a fence and the gun went off and shot Doy in the stomach. The police talked to most of the neighbors asking if they thought he had done it on purpose but most everyone said he would never. The only one that thought he did was one of Doy's uncles who told Britt not to come around anymore because they believed he did it on purpose.
When Britt's daughter Christy Lee Cole looked on www.findagrave.com searching for Doyle Boyd there was no picture of the grave but a story as follows: Doyle R. Boyd Feb. 11 1928 May 20, 1944 Haywood Pittsburg County Oklahoma, USA Doyle R. Boyd, a 16 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Boyd of the Haywood community, was fatally wounded Saturday afternoon while hunting with a lad of about the same age, not far from the farm on which the Boyd family lives. The accident was not reported to the county attorney's office until Monday forenoon. This afternoon the case is being investigated by Tom G. Haile and Deputy Sheriff Jimmy Jones. Sheriff Bill Alexander made a preliminary visit to the scene but knowing to the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, did not complete the probe. He said that from the information gathered there, the death was purely accidental. The companion of young Boyd was carrying a shotgun over a shoulder and the lad who was shot was in direct line when the gun accidentally discharged. The charge hit the victim in his stomach. Chaney's Funeral Service was called and the body was brought to McAlester. This afternoon at 3 o'clock, the youth is being buried with funeral services at the Hickory Grove Cemetery (The McAlester News Capital, May 22, 1944) Aunt Violeeta told me that Mr. Vann was still alive when shooting happened. Violeeta was married and living with her in-laws because her husband J.L. was in the service. (for time purposes) After the shooting, Pine & Elizabeth picked up Violeeta and they went to their moms house. Violeeta said that her mom cried and cried but daddy just sat looking sad. Britt was very close to Mr. Vann and Mr. Vann was good to Britt and his death hit Britt hard.
According to his separation papers from the service, Britt enlisted in the military when he was a sophomore in high school age 17, and it shows he was married at that time. When he returned from his National Guard service, he was divorced and his separation date is Jul 4, 1952 and he married Billie just 6 days later. During his service he received a WWII Victory Medal from his service in the Army and was listed as a Combination Welder and was a qualified sharpshooter. He was called back to service into the National Guard and is listed as a Magazine Keeper. From that service he received the Combat Infantry Badge, Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star and the United Nations Service Medal. He was in the 45th Recon Co. APO 86. Even though later he attended college in Ada, OK (There is a college yearbook held by his daughter, Celia), There seems to be no record of his graduating high school or getting a GED. In the 1940 census he was living in Bucklucksy Twp with Will Vann (indexed as Will Vaw).
Britt became a violent drunk. It wasn't till after his first cancer surgery in 1984 that he quit drinking and went to Alcoholics Anonymous. He attended a meeting pretty much every day. He was a pretty spry man with sparkling blue eyes and loved to dance. He had his voice box removed in 1984 and received all the radiation he could ever have in his life. In January 2000, The cancer reoccured. Since he couldn't have any more radiation, he had one chemotherapy treatment and went downhill immediately. He was on in home hospice, so his daughter Celia moved a hospital bed in her living room. He hung on until the beginning of June. He was moved to a hospice facility and passed away the next day. It's my opinion he held on because he didn't want to die in his daughters home.
