Notes
a. Note:   How the names of those who were identified as Lemuel's children was determined by Dr. Luby Royal of Smithfield, N.C. is not known. He did his research on the Lee family during the early 1950's and perhaps determined their identity from land transactions and/or by word of mouth from some of the 'elder Lee's". His information concerning Lemuel Lee's 3 sons who moved from Johnston Co., N.C. to Arkansas seem totally accurate and will therefore assume that all his information concerning Lemuel's children is true as stated. Lemuel Lee's first wife is reputed to have been Ann Rains; however there is no record of their marriage. One of the 2 females listed in Lemuel Lee's household in 1787 should be this Ann Rains girl. Lemuel has 3 sons and one daughter on this date. In 1790, when the first U.S. Census was taken, Lemuel Lee still has his 3 sons, all under age 16 and 3 additional females have been added to the household since 1787, which brings his total number of children to 6. Age profiles for the children listed in Lemuel's household at the 1800 census indicate that one of his sons has died or left the home. Likely this unidentified-identified son has died; as the 8 years between John and Cader is ample space for several children to have been born into this family. Lemuel has 2 sons between the age of 16 & 26; These fit the age profile for Henry and John. The two sons under age 10 fit the age profile for Cader and William. Age for Lemuel is listed as over age 45; while his wife's age indicated that she has not yet reached age 45. There are 2 daughters between the ages of 16 & 26; two between age 10 & 16 and 1 under age 10. At this point in time, Lemuel Lee has fathered at least 10 children. There is a marriage record found in Gates, Co., N.C. date of late 1795, showing where a Lemuel Lee married a Mary Saunders, Lemuel's second wife. A marriage date of 1795 would cause Mary Saunders to possibly be the mother of at least 4 of Lemuel's children which we can identify by given name. Between 1800 and 1810, three more sons are added to Lemuel's family: Between 1810 and 1820, one daughter has been added to his household, bringing his total children to 13. There is evidence that two sons and one daughter were added between 1820 & 1830 by his marriage to the third wife, Nancy Alford, this would bring his grand total of children to at least 16. Therefore, several of Lemuel's children have not been identified. There is a 59 year old widow, Nancy Lee, who appears on the 1850 U.S. Census report who is suspected to be Lemuel's last wife and widow. In her household are 2 females whose names are illegible: Their ages are 45 & 16 respectively. A son, 15 year old James Lee is in her household also. The large discrepancy between the 1840 & 1850 census reports, in age profiles for these people, prevent declaration this Nancy Lee as the widow and children of Lemuel Lee Lemuel Lee applied for a Revolutionary War pension on Sep 10, 1834 in Johnston Co., N.C. (R6253 North Carolina Line); from this document Lemuel's birth date can be established. He also states he has always lived with 8 to 10 miles of his birth place in Johnston Co., N.C. On this document, he mentions a John Lee but does not give his relationship. Lemuel's application for a pension was denied. A John Lee, who is assumed to be his younger brother, signed Lemuel's marriage bond in 1823, when he married Nancy Alford. Lemuel will have been about age 70 at the time of this marriage and one would assume this union produced no children. However, this assumption is likely in error upon examination of the 1830 census. At this time, it is believed that Lemuel Lee was married 3 times, and had children by all 3 marriages. When the first Tax List for Johnston Co., N.C. was compiled, Lemuel Lee and 11 other Lee households were enumerated as residents of Johnston Co. Quite likely all are related to each other if not direct descendates of John Lee Esq. Early census records lists no name other than the household head, and gives ages so vague as to render them all but useless to a genealogist. At the time of the 1820 census, Lemuel's second wife was still living. This census lists a female over 45 years of age in his household whom is assumed to be his wife, Mary Saunders. There are 3 females age 16 to 26 & one female under age 10. Four sons of various ages are also listed. The adult female nor any of the children listed in the 1820 census are in Lemuel Lee's household at the time of the 1830 census. The adult female in Lemuel's household in 1830 is definitely not Mary; and marriage records show that Lemuel re-married in 1823 to Nancy Alford. If Nancy is the adult female in Lemuel's household at the time of the 1830 census; her marriage to Lemuel Lee is certainly a rue May/December union. The census places her age between 20 & 30 while Lemuel's age is between 70 & 80. On this census there are 2 children in Lemuel's household: A male between age 5 & 10 and a female under age 5. Neither of these children fit the age profile of his children listed on the 1820 census, nor will their ages allow them to have been brought with Nancy at the time of her marriage to Lemuel. A known marriage date of 1823 should cause this male child to be no older than 6. He is still in the household at the time of the 1840 census, as is the female child who was under 5 years at the time of the 1830 census. Her age in 1840 is not listed as being between 5 & 10 which means she was likely newborn at the time of the 1830 census. The names of these two children are not known at this time. On the 1840 census, Lemuel Lee is shown to be between 80 & 90. His actual death date is not known, but will have occurred some time after the census of 1840, (determined to be abt 1843 by land deed records). Very likely some of the older children never saw the last child born to Lemuel Lee and his third wife Nancy. By 1825, William, one of the 3 sons who moved to Arkansas, was already living in western Tennessee. Johnston Co. land records indicate that Lemuel Lee purchased from his uncle. Capt. Thomas Lee, a portion of land which Thomas had inherited from John Lee Esq. John's will had provided that Thomas would inherit the home place upon the death of John's wife, Mary who was to have possession of the plantation home until she died or remarried. Per Dr. Elbert Johnson Lee /St.Louis,MO (gs/Lemuel); Lemuel was of V A & close rel/LHH.
