Notes
a. Note:   William's birth and baptismal dates are extracted from the records found at Zion Lutheran Chu rch, located in Harrisburg, Dauphin county, PA. His baptismal sponsor was Wilhelm (William) P hurman. This record can be found on page 34 of the Zion Lutheran records, film #1298604, loca ted in the LDS Salt Lake Genealogical Library. Additional Information regarding William Sheet z is found in the Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin Co., 1896, by Run k & Company, pg 754, and 755. It states, "William J. Sheetz was born in Dauphin county, Novem ber 20, 1805. He grew up on the farm, and when a young man came to Jefferson Twp., (after 182 2, the year of his father's death) where he bought two hundred acres of land, on which he bui lt a brick dwelling and barn, made other improvements, and carried on farming and stock raisi ng. He was enterprising and prosperous. Mr. Sheetz was married to Barbara, daughter of Christ ian and Margaret Zimmerman, of Jackson Twp., b. June 3, 1811." It further goes on to name (i n his bio) all of his children's names and some of their spouses. Also, that William and hi s family were Lutherans, and that politically he was a Democrat. It states that he died in Wa yne Twp., while his wife died in Jackson Twp.. A marriage year of 1830 is approximate, base d on the birth of their first born. In the 1830 US PA census records William Sheetz is liste d living in Jackson Twp., Dauphin county, which later became Jefferson Twp. in 1844. In the 1 850 US PA census records William's property and realistate were valued at $4,000. In the 187 0 census this property value rose to $6,500, and personal property to $818.00. On a map showi ng Jefferson Township landowners for the year 1875, it indicates that William Sheetz had 30 0 acres (near brother George), on the northside of Powell's Creek. William's original brick r esidence is in existence today (2002), and it claims a charming lily pond on it's grounds, lo cated at the foot of a sloping back yard which ends close to the edge of Powell's Creek. Lus h vegetation and pine trees surround the house and nearby buildings. (Today (2002) the homest ead, with their surrounding buildings, are owned by John Kelly and his wife). In a letter wri tten to this compiler in 1999 from Mr. Kelly, a number of revelations were uncovered about th e Sheetz homestead. Quoting from the text of the letter: "The barn has a date in the peak o f 1848. The house has an engraved stone with William and Barbara Sheetz's name and the date 1 855. I have been told that when farms were established, the barn was the most important build ing and would usually predate the house. I suspect that one of the outbuildings would have se rved as their "original" house until the brick home was built. Quite possibly it was the tw o story spring house which has a walk-in fireplace in it. There were even more buildings on t he property that I am aware of, and possibly some that I am not aware of". William is burie d in Bowerman's Lutheran and Reformed Church cemetery, located in Enterline, just a short dis tance from his homestead. Birth and death dates are inscribed on his tombstone.
