  One by one the old pioneers are passing away. A few more years and none of those who came here in an early day and have done so much that our township should be brought to such a high state will be left to tell the story of the early settlers and their hardships. Mrs. Sarah Ann Astry whose death occurred Jan 15th 1890 at her home in this township was the wife of Jonas Astry Sen who died three yrs ago last Dec. She lived to the ripe old age of 70 yrs and 27 days. In 1853 she with her husband came to this township from Columbiana county and two years later purchased the farm on which they both lived and died. Cleaning away the spot on which to erect a house and by diligence and industry curved out one of the finest farms in the country.
  She was the mother of thirteen children, twenty-four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She lived to see all her children grown to woman and manhood. Eleven of them survive her. The children are Jonas Jr. of Ft. Wayne, Mrs. Arminda Zeis of Harlan Ind., Joseph of Chicago, Ill, Mrs. Martha Haifly of Springfield Twp., (David & George) deceased, Mrs. Mary Grill of DeKalb Co, Isaac of Huntington, Ind., Sarah of Ft. Wayne, Alice Mann of Meadeville Pa., Geo. A. of Reading, Mich., Mrs. Mahala Thompson of Huntington, Ind. and Samantha of Springfield Twp.
