If I remember correctly, the first reunion of the descendents of George Washington Bower was held on John Franklin Bower's 40th birthday. It seems it was John's wife who initiated putting it all together. It was held at the stone house. Several of those at the reunion this year had been to the first one. One talked about Uncle Red (Collins) Sykes. It was said he was always a cut up. They talked about Uncle Lloyd Kiess always wearing a straw hat. Uncle Red slipped up behind him as he sat in a chair and pulled the hat down over his ears. [Harold Bower Sr. after the 1999 family reunion]
One of the motives for John Franklin and Anna hosting a reunion on John's 40th birthday was to have the family all together because they had been scattered about after their mother's death. (John Antes Bower 1999)
