Note: Visit Guest Book BARBARA JOYCE SMITH POTTER Barbara S. Potter, age 90, of Mission, Kansas, passed away on August 2, 2010. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, August 5, at the Stine & McClure Chapel, with burial at Forest Hill Cemetery, Kansas City. Visitation at 10 a.m. at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Barbara's memory to the UMKC Conservatory of Music at 4949 Cherry St., KC, MO 64110- 2229. Barbara was born May 31, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo. She married David M. Potter on November 15, 1941, after working together at the FBI in Washington, D.C. She was a professional musician and played for 46 years in the Kansas City Symphony and Kansas City Philharmonic. She was also active in the KC Ballet, Starlight, and Lyric Opera orchestras. She studied at the Interlochen Music & Art Camp in the late 30s, and in her early career played with Kansas City Maestro William DeRubertis. She taught numerous individual cello students throughout her professional years. Barbara was a member of the FBI Women's Association and had belonged to the Sigma Alpha Iota Music Sorority. She graduated from East High and attended reunions until recent years. She was preceded in death by her sister, brother, husband, and her longtime friend and companion, Harold Childers. She is survived by her three children, David, Doug and Barb, and five grandchildren, David Matthew Potter, Liberty, Mo., Evan and Josh Flett, Overland Park, Kan., Robin Potter, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Lauren Potter, Merriam, Kan. She will be greatly missed by friends and family; all those whose lives she touched by her music, warmth, and sense of humor.
