Note: personal knowledge (my father)
I have a copy of his Social Security Application. He was 26 years old and wanted to go to work for Muhly's Bakery. Maybe that is when he had met Mom and was thinking of getting married. They were were married in 1937 and the application was done in Dec. 1936. Mom worked for Muhly's at one time, but that was years later, when they were in Lexington Mkt and she was already divorced.
Dad got custody of me in the divorce and I went to live with him and Grandmom and Granddad Wirth. Dad was a typical man and never showed his feelings, so all the warmth came from Grandmom.
We all went to the beach to visit Uncle Frank and Aunt Eva (no relations) all the time. They had a place on the water and we were there a lot. We used to pick up hitchhiking Sailors from the Coast Guard Yard which was on the way. Little would I know that I would live near there and raise my kids in the area. they lived in Lombardi Beach. the fire hall had a carnival every year, and I never missed one to my knowledge. Frances was Frank and Eva's daughter, and I considered her a real cousin. I used to go and spend a week down there during the summer. I just loved being in the water.
Then dad remarried and I went to live with him and my stepfamily, Alice had 3 children, Michael and Vernon and I were the same age and we were inseparable. The only child finally had a family. Margie was older than the twins and I. Later, Dad and Alice had kids together. Billy was born and then Terri Lee.
Mike and Vern and I smoked our first cigarette together, skipped stones in Herring Run. Dad caught us one day and punished us because we weren't supposed to be near the water. It was supposed to be polluted. We got a spanking and I think I cried more because the boys got a spanking than because I did. We climbed trees, played ball, and generally spent our time in the park. For some reason that I can't remember, I threw a pencil at Mike and he has the piece of lead in his ear to this day. It seemed like I was always black and blue, because we were either wrestling, or they were poking me in the arm.

There are 4 William Wirths in the 1940 Census. One is Grand Dad age 59 Ward 8 on Chester St (That is the house I remember and is next to the Bakery he owned, one is Dad age 29 in Ward 8 on Washington St, and 2 others. One of the others is 42 in Ward 20 on Lauretta Ave. and is William F like Dad and one is 75 and is William in Ward 8 on Castle St, born MD. I wonder if they were related.
