His parents brought him to the United States in July 1884 when he was four. He pronounced his middle name "Ahnn-gel," with a hard G. The ship which brought the family across from Norway was named the "Tingvalla," landing in Philadelphia or Boston. Sigurd said that was its name, as told to him by his father. His parents moved to Duluth, Minnesota in 1894, when he was about 15. He was employed in Duluth as a wholesale druggist for Northern Drug Company and as a retail druggist for the Orpheum Drug Store, as well as a "relief" person for other drug stores. He had a sideline business of selling wheat germ, which he boxed up and then sold in grocery stores, printing his own labels on a printing press in his basement. He supplied his grandchildren Peter and Richard Rhode with saltpeter, charcoal and sulphur so that they could make gunpowder. In 1942 he took a six-week electrician course (he had previous experience wiring houses) and then took a job as an electrician at the shipyard in Superior, Wisconsin, which was building ships for the U.S. Navy during World War II (in 1942 he was 63 years old). He worked the night shift in maintenance, through 1945 [source: Robert B Rhode 27 Aug 1999]. Sigurd was a 32nd-degree Mason and Past Grand Master. He and his wife lived downstairs in their home, which he had remodeled to a duplex, and rented out the upstairs. He had a cabin in the woods by Pike Lake, which was not far from Robert H Tennant's cabin, but it was far more modest. He died 22 Apr 1966, aged 86, and is buried in the Rhode plot at Park Hill Cemetery in Duluth. When he died son Robert was 52 and son Richard was 51. His grandchildren Peter, Richard, Kathy and Chris were 24, 22, 16 and 12. Quote from Richard H Rhode 23 Nov 1998: "I loved to visit my grandparents' home, usually after church on Sundays. It smelled good, usually of cooking and the rose petals grandmother kept in a jar in the dining room. Grandmother often had made chocolate chip cookies for us when we came to visit. They had a wind-up cabinet phonograph, probably a Victrola, with the thick old records, in the front room. They would let us kids play it, carefully. The kitchen was at the back of the house, and through the kitchen we would go down the stairs to the basement, which was dark and mysterious, as grandfather had only a few dim bulbs down there. He would let us run the printing press to make labels for his wheat germ. He had all sorts of chemicals down there, arrayed on shelves, with narrow lanes between." Quote from Richard S Rhode 22 Feb 1998: "I never did any curling as my Dad never joined the Curling Club in Duluth; our Uncle Storm belonged however. My Dad was never interested in any sport: his sport was a hammer and a handful of nails! We rebuilt the cabin out at Pike Lake by taking down the old cabin board by board, carrying it down the path and putting the damn thing together again. Every Sunday and holiday until winter set in was spent there on that work project. When it was finally finished I never set foot out there." Newspaper clipping from the scrapbooks of Agnes Berg Rhode [probably from the Missoulian" of Missoula, Montana] dated 14 Dec 1946: Man Injured in Car Accident Improved Sigurd Rhode of Duluth, who was hit by a car five miles west of Drummond late Thursday night, suffered a punctured lung ["punctured lung" is crossed out on the clipping], several broken ribs and abrasions, but was "progressing nicely," Friday, physicians at the Northern Pacific hospital said. Highway patrolman said Rhode was struck while walking up a hill when a car, driven by Jack Cunningham of Seattle, skidded ["skidded" is crossed out on the clipping and "ran" is substituted] into him. Newspaper clipping from the scrapbooks of Agnes Berg Rhode from the "Missoulian" of Missoula, Montana] dated 15 Dec 1946: S. A. Rhode Showing Improvement, Physicians Report Sigurd A. Rhode of Duluth, injured Thursday when struck by an automobile near Drummond, is showing slow improvement, attending physicians said Saturday. Rhode suffered a fractured arm, broken ribs and a punctured lung ["punctured lung" is crossed out on the clipping]. With Mrs. Rhode, he was on his way to Missoula for a Christmas visit with his son, R. A. Rhode [sic], division engineer on the Northern Pacific railway with headquarters here. He had stopped his car in the snowstorm and was walking to the rear of the car when he was struck by J. Cunningham of Seattle, who said that poor visibility was responsible for the accident, highway patrolmen said. Robert B Rhode related the following story 13 Mar 1998 about how his father was struck by a car in Montana and had his leg broken: "He was driving out that winter [of 1946] to visit us before Christmas; he was going to be at our house for Christmas. He was planning on going on to California to visit my brother as well. We were living in the house at 1916 South 13th Street [in Missoula, Montana]. They were driving and had come through Helena and were headed towards Missoula just west of Drummond some five miles. It was snowing, a wet snow. So he started up this hill and he couldn't make it. I don't know why. He had driven in Duluth roads like this all the time. My brother thought that my father couldn't drive a car. I think he could drive as well as anybody else. They stopped; they had to stop. He got out to clear the windshield or something. To look to see how he was stuck. The question is whether he was off the highway far enough. A fellow came along and hit him from behind. My mother called; she had to go back to Drummond, and got an ambulance for him. Reese Humphries was in Drummond at that time, so I called him; I knew he was there, and he took care of things from that end. My Dad came in by ambulance; Reese drove the car back. We took him to the Northern Pacific hospital and he was there for a couple of weeks." Q: Why did your father keep all those chemicals in his basement? A: He was thinking he could sell them to various pharmacies in Duluth and beyond; in effect he was a wholesale drug firm. He was on his own; he represented some firms that weren't represented in the area. He sold them from time to time and made a few cents on them. The chemicals weren't dangerous in themselves. If you mixed them possibly they were. My dad was theoretically retired at about 58; well, he left work. He decided that he had to have something to do to continue to make a few pence and he went into the wholesale drug business. He represented a certain firm out east that wasn't represented in the Duluth area and fairly successfully sold these drugs pharmacy to pharmacy around Duluth, Cloquet, Superior, and somewhat on the Iron Range. He made his own deliveries, but he could also order directly from his firm for delivery to the store. The truck always took several days; it wasn't as prompt as it might be so he was handicapped [in a business sense] in that direction. But he did have a few of the popular items stored in his basement. There were various chemicals in those days - you didn't have the various fancy [modern] drugs that you have today. He could handle insulin for instance but he usually did that directly from the source, maybe in Minneapolis or Chicago. Also he decided that he would put up wheat germ in one-pound boxes. That was a great occupation for him. He acquired the wheat germ at a grain elevator in Superior, Wisconsin, in hundred-pound sacks. He used cardboard containers. He got the cardboard, cut it into boxes the size of "Cream of Wheat" boxes, and made the labels. He had a printing press where he made the labels. One of his outlets was a fella in Esterville, Iowa, to whom he shipped cases every month. He also sold in a SuperValu store in West Duluth, about 41st Avenue West and Grand Avenue, where he knew the proprietor, Mr. Thorpe. Also he sold it around in some of the grocery stores in Duluth. I don't know that he really made any money out of it, but it was a great activity for him. The press is now in the hands of his grandson, Richard [source: recorded interview with Robert Berg Rhode 16 Sep 2001]. Email to Peter S Rhode from James Christensen - christensen.james.a AT gmail.com - dated 21 Sep 2019: After doing some checking with several Masonic members we were able find records for your Grandfather Sigurd. He was installed on October 10, 1921 as the Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Royal and Select Masters (now the Cryptic Masons) of Minnesota. To further explain this to you, your Grandfather was as you know a Mason and member of TW Hugo Lodge which merged with Lakeside Lodge to form Lake Superior Lodge #349. There are appendant bodies of Masons that 3rd Degree Masons can elect to join. They are the Scottish Rite and the York Rite Masons. The Degrees of these are the 4th-32 Degrees. There is also a 33rd Degree which is an Honorary Degree as well for each. There is also other Appendant Bodies such as the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Grotto, Shrine, Etc. and we also have Youth Groups as well. Your Grandfather was a York Rite Mason and there are 3 Bodies within the York Rite. They are the Royal Arch, Knight Templars, and the Cryptic Council. Your Grandfather was a State Officer and reached the level of Most Illustrious Grand Master for the Cryptic Masons. Each Appendant Body has different levels of State Officers. The York Rite, Scottish Rite, and Shrine also have International level Officers. Each State has Grand Masters of their perspective Blue Lodges. The Grand Master of Masons is the highest Mason over all Masons in each perspective State and of all Appendant Bodies. There is no International Grand Master. I hope this explains the hierarchy of Masonry. Your Father and Grandfather were well respected Masons. I have shown the photo of the Apron to several Masons and they were in awe. I sent the Apron and both bibles to our Museum in Bloomington where they can now be viewed and saved for the next generations to come.
