Ruth Helen Swarts was born December 24, 1914 in Brookville, Jefferson County Pennsylvania. She is the daughter of Franklin Barber and Leta Louisa Plyler Swarts. On 24 November 1941 she married Leroy Kimber Sholes.
After graduating from Brookville High School, she worked from age 18-28 (through the Depression years) for the Caulley family of DuBois PA as their housekeeper/ nanny. From 1940-1960 she was a homemaker and worked with Leroy in the church ministry. They made a wonderful team as they worked in many large church charges in the Christian and MIssionary Alliance and Evangelical United Brethren and Methodist denominations. She established Ladies Aides and childrens's ministries in many of the churches that were small and needed leadership to get them started. She taught Child Evangelism in Berwick and Mexico for a few years. In 1961 she received her LPN from Bellefonte Hospital School of Nursing and worked in nursing homes in Centre, Juniata and Perry Counties. She enjoyed being a teacher's aid in Rebersburg and Austin public schools. She and Leroy lived in Iowa for parts of two years with their son David's family. Ruth died of stroke June 25, 1981 at Harrisburg Hospital. She lived her last week with her daughter's family in Mechanicsburg, PA.
