Former Well Known Resident Dies in Kirkwood
The following obituary of Mrs. John Salter, formerly of Oquawka vicinity, was read during the funeral services which were held at Kirkwood, her present home town, Friday afternoon, after which it was sent to the Journal for publication, as the Journal reaches a large number of her former friends and acquaintances, all of who held her in very high esteem and will be grieved to learn of her death.
Obituary: A deep pall of sadness was cast over our entire community Wedesday morning when word came from Burlington, Iowa, that Mrs. John Salter had passed away Tuesday night, January 9th, 1929, about 10:30 at the Burlington hospital, after a brief illness.
Jennie Estelle Fox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Fox, was born in Rutledge, Vermont, on December 25, 1852. When but a mere child her parents left the old state of Vermont and came west intending to go perhaps somewhere farther west, but her father took sick when they had reached Burlington, Iowa, after which the family lived there for a few years.
The family later moved into the Oquawka vincinity where they resided for a number of years. On December 11, 1873 she was united in marriage to John Salter of the Salter's Grove, and took up their residence on the old Salter Farm where they have always lived.
God blessed this union with four children, namely; Charles of Chicago, Walter of Kirkwood, Mrs. Clyde Ervin of Emmerson, Iowa, and George of Kirkwood.
Mrs. Salter made her public profession in Jesus Christ as her Saviour some years ago, and was a great worker in the Salter Grove church, taking active part in all the work of that congregation, and loved to teach in the Sunday school, having had charge of a class that was known as the Banner Class of that Sunday school.
She was united with the First Presbyterian church of Kirwood, Illinois on the 12th day of July, 1908 by letter, and was always willing and ever cheerful in doing her part in the church work.
She was a member of the Women's Missionary Society of the church, Ladies Aid, and the Sunday school being a member of the elderly ladies class.
Her life needs no eulogy, for here was a beautiful life. She was a devoted wife, a loving, tender and patient mother...(unreadable)
