Note: Being the younger son of a Lord and expecting to inherit nothing, Lord Thomas Avenwell came to Newland with his 2nd wife, Rebecca in 1770 and their friends, Lord William Cooke, and his wife, Lady Jeanette.
However, shortly after establishing a residence in Avenwell Bluffs, the small sea-side town in Cooke County, Newland, the place they preferred to call home, Thomas’s father and two older brothers died, and Thomas became the 5th Duke of Avenwell.
He and his cousin, Lord William Cooke, established the metropolitan cites of Knight City named for the Lady Jeanette Knight's family;
and Helsdon, named for Lord Thomas's wife, Lady Rebecca Helsdon-Avenwell
