Note: arah Nagle are the 1880 and 1910 Pennsylvania census records cited below. This is a partial reconstruction of this family. The 1910 census states that Sarah was the mother of 11 children of whom only three were living in 1910. The family was plagued with difficulties. Richard and Sarah evidently lived apart after 1900 and on the 1910 census Sarah listed herself as a widow, even though Richard was still living in town. There are multiple articles from the Allentown Leader around 1900 indicating that Richard had been jailed for non support and Sarah taking him to court for the same. In addition, between 1903 (and even undocumented cases earlier) and 1910 the couple saw the death of one child after another. Based on the evidence of several of the children being born in Indiana and the Allentown newspaper articles regarding Richard and Sarah's differences around 1900, it seems that the family resided in Indiana from abt 1885 to the late 90's. Monroe eventually settled there. This family has left a very confusing paperwork trail. The fact that Richard Nagle did not appear in multiple Lehigh County directories suggests the family resided outside the county; yet the church, cemetery and other records occasionally conflict. The claim that Milla and Robert were born in Indiana also adds credence to the claim of residency elsewhere. The most interesting entries include the 1903 Directory entry when Sarah is listed as the widow of Richard. This certainly conflicts with the possible death of Richard Nagle in 1911 as listed in the cemetery and newspaper entries below. I have previously seen incidences where a woman separated from her husband listed herself as a widow. This may have occurred with the Richard and Sarah Nagle family. Further information verifying the marriage of Richard and Sarah Ellen is from the Musick Family chart kept with the manuscript 'Kohl Family and Allied lines of Pennsylvania' by Helen Wittmann Kohl, GEN KO3:1, held in the Pennsylvania Genealogical Society in Philadelphia. The source for the marriage of Richard and Sarah is The 2 Apr. 1873 edition of the “Friedensbote” German language newspaper reported the marriage of Richard Nagel of Catasauqua to Sarah Musick of Allentown by Rev. Yeager on 6 Mar. 1873. 1880 census Name Richard Nagle Event Type Census Event Year 1880 Event Place Hanover, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, United States Gender Male Age 38 Marital Status Married Race White Race (Original) W Occupation Teamster Relationship to Head of Household Self Relationship to Head of Household (Original) Self Birth Year (Estimated) 1842 Birthplace Pennsylvania, United States Father's Birthplace Pennsylvania, United States Mother's Birthplace Pennsylvania, United States Richard Nagle Self M 38 Pennsylvania, United States Sarah Nagle Wife F 32 Pennsylvania, United States Monroe Nagle Son M 5 Pennsylvania, United States Amanda Nagle Daughter F 3 Pennsylvania, United States "United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MWN7-PDQ : accessed 3 September 2015), Richard Nagle, Hanover, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, United States; citing enumeration district 210, sheet 671B, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 1148; FHL microfilm 1,255,148. Richard and Sarah Nagle have not been found on the 1900 census, which I believe may be due to a spelling error of the surname in transcription. Sarah is listed as widowed on the 1910 census, whereas she was actually separated from Richard. If the record is to be believed Sarah was the mother of eleven children, of whom only three were living in 1910. Based on records below under 'children', these would be Minnie (who died shortly after the census was taken), Bertha, enumerated on the 1910 census, and Monroe, documented below as living in Indiana in 1910. This is one source for the deaths of children Robert and Jennie, besides those listed below. Another interesting item is that both Minnie and Bertha are listed in the 1910 census as being born in Indiana. Yet on Minnie's Pennsylvania State Death Certificate cited below under 'children', her birthplace is listed as Salisbury, Lehigh County. The death date for Richard F. Nagel was found on the Rittersville Cemetery tombstone, that entry was also found in the “Allentown Democrat” on 29 Nov. 1911: Richard F. Nagel of West Bethlehem died 27 Nov.1911; aged 65 years, 2 months, 27 days. Unfortunately no additional family information was provided in this death notice. CHILDREN: The St. Peter’s Union Cemetery listed the following tombstone inscriptions: Minnie A. Nagel (no dates) Robert B. Nagel (no dates) Mella C. Nagel (no dates) Richard F. Nagel, 31 Aug. 1846 – 27 Nov. 1911 The source for the middle names of father Richard Nagle as Franklin and Richard's wife, Sarah Musick as Ellen, is from the St Joseph County, Indiana marriage certificate of their son, Monroe Nagle. "Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1959," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KZC5-956 : accessed 22 Nov 2014), Monroe Alfred Nagle and Ella E Hoffman, ; citing, county clerk offices, Indiana; FHL microfilm 001503527. This is also the source for the birth date of Monroe, his birthplace as 'Allentown', as well as the corresponding data for his bride Ella Hoffman. A note on the above middle name of Richard- The obituary of his daughter Amanda gives his name as Richard M Nagle and the Pennsylvania State Death Certificate gives it as Richard F Nagle. Regarding the marriage certificate of Monroe cited under the notes onhis page, this Monroe is definitely the same Monroe who appears on the 1880 Lehigh County census. Monroe and wife Ella are later found on the 1910 (Cass County), and 1920 (Wabash County) Indiana census with information that, without the initial info on the marriage certificate, would make them seem like a completely different couple. For example Monroe's parents (who are not present in the household) are recorded on the 1910 St Joseph County, Indiana census as being born in Germany and he is listed as born in Indiana (this discrepancy in location is also found with his sisters). On the 1930 (St Joseph County) census his parents are back to Pennsylvania for birth, but his state of nativity is still Indiana!! Sloppiness, clerical error? Who knows? But without the marriage certificate this would seem like a completely different couple. The 16 May 1903 obituary of unmarried Amanda S Nagle from the Allentown Morning Call reads in part, "Amanda S Nagle, daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard M Nagle died yesterday in South Allentown, aged 26 years, 11 months, and 11 days, after the brief illness of only one week. Her parents and these brothers and sisters survive: Robert B, Millie C, Jennie A, and Bertha B Nagle..." Of interest is the exclusion of brother Monroe, living in Indiana who died after 1930. Amanda is one of the eight non-surviving children of Richard and Sarah implied in the 1910 census Besides Monroe and Amanda on the 1880 census this obituary cites Millie (actually it is Minnie as per death certificate below), Bertha, Robert, and Jennie. The source for the birth of Emma Henrietta are the records of St. Peter’s Union, located in the Rittersville area in East Allentown. A search of their records held at the Lehigh County Historical Society found one baptism record associated with the Nagle family: Emma Henrietta, daughter of Richard F. and Sarah Ellen Nagle, b. 1 Apr. 1881, bapt. 13 Jun. 1881; Sponsors: Parents. The source for the 'bef. 1903' death of Emma Henrietta is her non mention as a survivor in the obituary cited above of her sister, Amanda. She is one of the eight non-surviving children of Richard and Sarah implied in the 1910 census The source for the death and age of unmarried Milla Nagle, not mentioned in the obituary above due to her death a few months prior to it, is the Lehigh County Death docket: Milla Nagel, 17 years old d. 27 Feb.1903 b. Indiana burial: Rittersville Father: Richard Nagel Mother: Sarah E. Nagel The source for her place of burial in Rittersville are the records of St Peter's Union. Milla is one of the eight non-surviving children of Richard and Sarah implied in the 1910 census Millie in the obituary of Amanda cited above is unmarried Minnie C who died single in 1910 as indicated from her Pennsylvania State Death Certificate no. 108447. This is the source for the birth place of Minnie and Richard being Salisbury, and the date and location of her burial. Keep in mind this place of birth is in conflict with the Indiana birth location cited in the 1910 census. Perhaps the family WAS there during the late 80's and early 90's. There may have been some connection to Indiana since son Monroe settled there as a newlywed and remained until 1930. She is one of the eight non-surviving children of Richard and Sarah implied in the 1910 census The source for the birth year and location of Bertha is her appearance in the 1910 census cited above. The discovery of the marriage for Bertha came about by noticing the name of the informant on the Death Certificate of mother Sarah Nagle- Mrs. Melvin Young. Hoping this might be Bertha I checked the 1920 through 1930 census records and found a Bertha born in 1894 in Indiana married to Melvin. The 1920 and 1930 Pennsylvania census' are the sources for her marriage to Melvin Young, his birth year and location and the source for the 'bef. 1918' marriage is based on the age of the eldest child on the 1920 census. "United States Census, 1920," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MXSH-H5X : accessed 23 September 2015), Melvil M Young, Whitehall, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, United States; citing sheet 4B, family 68, NARA microfilm publication T625 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 1,821,590. "United States Census, 1930," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHQN-KMM : accessed 23 September 2015), Melvin E Young, Allentown, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) 0009, sheet 8A, family 211, line 11, NARA microfilm publication T626 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2002), roll 2062; FHL microfilm 2,341,796. The sources for the parents of Melvin, more specific dates for his birth and death, and the specific dates for Bertha are from their respective Pennsylvania State Death Certificates nos. 65814 and 95683. The source for the birth year and death of Robert B Nagle is the Lehigh County Death Docket: RobertNagle, 13 years old d. 5/10/1904 b. Indiana burial: Rittersville Father: Richard Nagle Mother: Sarah E. Nagle The source for his place of burial in Rittersville are the records of St Peter's Union. Robert is one of the eight non-surviving children of Richard and Sarah implied in the 1910 census The only source for the existence of daughter Jennie A is her mention as a survivor in the 1903 obituary above of sister Amanda. Her non appearance on the 1910 census implies a pre 1910 death. She was obviously one of the eight non-surviving children of Richard and Sarah implied in the 1910 census. Further death information about the children follows: With the death dates provided in the Lehigh County death records, a search of death entries/obituaries published in the “Allentown Democrat” newspaper was conducted: Amanda S. Nagel: “Allentown Democrat” 20 May 1903: Died 15 May 1903 in South Allentown, Amanda S., daughter of Richard F. and Sarah Nagle, aged 26 years, 11 months, 11 days. Milla Nagel: No entry found in the “Allentown Democrat” Robert Nagle: “Allentown Democrat”: Died 10 May 1904 in West Catasauqua, Robert B., son of Richard and Sarah Nagle, aged 12 years, 6 months, 13 days.
