Notes
a. Note: owa. James and Cynthia Jane divorced in Iowa probably between 1900 and 1901 and James remarried to Caroline Hedges Kline in 1901 in Webster County, Iowa and is widowed on the 1920 census. His first wife, Cynthia Mudge Martin, lived without re marrying until 1939. Caroline Hedges brings more names into the picture as she had two previous husbands who also had previous wives. I have not developed these threads but only allude to the two previous husbands of Caroline in the course of the narrative.

Cynthia is with her children but without James on the 1900 Boone County census but listed as married, without James on the 1905 Boone county census listed as divorced, in 1908 we find her next door in Keokuk County, Iowa Address Directory and listed as widow of James, and listed as widow on the 1910 census. As we know James lived until 1922 this 'widow' must have been given to avoid stigma of divorce, or did she just consider her former spouse dead to her? James is living with his nephew on the 1900 Boone County census without Cynthia and listed as married. As both James and Cynthia are living apart in 1900 but listed as married could the divorce have been in 1900 or shortly thereafter? James remarried to Caroline Kline Hedges in 1901.   The source for the second marriage of James Martin and Caroline Hedges Kline is "Iowa, County Marriages, 1838-1934," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XJCY-XSY : accessed 30 May 2014), James Martin and Caroline Hedges Kline, 25 Jul 1901; citing Ft Dodge, Webster, Iowa, United States; FHL microfilm 1401727.
As Caroline's father is listed as W J Hedges this is obviously a second marriage for Caroline Hedges Kline. The record of her first marriage is "Iowa, County Marriages, 1838-1934," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XJCS-9Y3 : accessed 30 May 2014), Antney W. Cline and Caroline Hedges, 06 Oct 1886; citing BOONE, IOWA; FHL microfilm 1034319. This is the source for the names of Caroline's parents and her birth location and year. Caroline had also been previously married to Thomas Kyle in Effingham, Illinois 21 March 1880. Both of these marriages evidently ended in divorce as Thomas Kyle lived until 1916 and Anthony Wayne Kline/Cline lived until 1925. I have not documented this data, but it can be easily accessed online.
Going back a bit, evidence that this James Martin, the son of Welcome and Margaret, is the same James Martin who married both Cynthia and Caroline is based on the fact that James Martin who first married Cynthia was married in Boone County next door to Dallas County where James' mother Margaret resided as late as the 1870 census. This Cynthia and James resided in Pilot Mound, Boone County on the 1880 census. James is listed as a 'widower' (really just separated) on the 1900 Boone County, Iowa census and married second Caroline Hedges living with her on the 1910 Iowa census in Pilot Mound, Boone County. On their marriage certificate James is listed as the son of Welcome and Margaret. It is unlikely that there would be two James Martins born in 1849-1850 in Ohio living in Pilot Mound and the son of Welcome and Margaret Martin.
The source for the exact birth and death dates and locations of James and Caroline are their headstones on FindaGrave.com online.

Note: James Martin was married first to Cynthia Jane Mudge in Boone County, I
