Connecting this James Freeman with the James Freeman appearing on the 1850 census in the family of David P Freeman was made on two counts. First, this is the only James Freeman in the Lawrence County area born anywhere near 1834, and he appears on the consecutive census records cited above with the same birth year. Second, one of his sons, David Freeman born in 1872, is listed as 'David P. Freeman' on his birth record. David P. Freeman is the name of James' father and his younger brother. Freeman, 03 Feb 1872; citing v 1 Page 164, Perry, Lawrence County, Ohio; FHL microfilm 317727. An Edward Sumpter is living with James and Margaret on the 1860 census cited above, and listed as being born in 1814 in Ohio. It is strong circumstantial evidence that this is Margaret's father, but cannot be proved without documentation. The source for the 'aft. Jan 1904' death for Margaret is based on the widows application (it looks like 7 March 1904) for pension. Source Information: National Archives and Records Administration.
