Note: 50 Grayson County, Virginia census and the 1860 and 1870 Lawrence County, Ohio census listings. A source for the birth date of Lewis is a photocopy of a page from the Barber Family Bible which I have seen. "Documentation for birth-death-marriage. Gordon Burney, PO Box 515, Summerland, FL 93067. Letter received Nov, Dec 1993 by Marilyn P Devaney. Photocopy of family Bible sent to Gordon by Dave Moore, Sarasota, FL, 21 March, 1993." The page was sent to me by Marilyn Devaney listed above. It reads: "Lewis Moore was born June the 17th in the year 1812." Another source for the birth and death dates and locations for Lewis is his page on FindaGrave.com online. The source for the marriage of Lewis and Delilah is Source Citation: Data Source: North Carolina State Archives. Source Information: Ancestry.com. North Carolina, Marriage Index, 1741-2004 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2007. Name: Lewis Moore Gender: Male Spouse: Delila Boyles Spouse Gender: Female Marriage Date: 17 Oct 1833 Marriage County: Rockingham Marriage State: North Carolina The source for the date of death for Lewis Moore in Lawrence County, Ohio is "Ohio, Deaths and Burials, 1854-1997," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F66V-HPJ : accessed 06 Dec 2013), Lewis Moore, 12 Jul 1879. His place of birth is mis-transcribed as Grayson County, Kentucky. I have not seen the original but it should obviously be Grayson County, Virginia. The source for the birthdate, birth location, burial location, and name of father for Delilah Boyles is her Ohio State Death Certificate no. 14321. This certificate states birth place is North Carolina, while some of the census records state Virginia. Grayson County, Virginia- the residence of the Moores between about 1810-1850- is on the border of North Carolina. Look for confirmation of her birth in either place. CHILDREN: Nancy E remained single as she is on the 1870 census and died in 1874. There is no marriage record between 1870 and 1874 in Lawrence County for a Nancy or Nancy E Moore. It is unclear if the two small children, Victor M age 3 and Mary C age two months, on the 1870 Lawrence County census are the children or grandchildren of Lewis and Delilah Moore. Based on the age of Delila they are probably grandchildren. Some sources claim they are illegitimate children of daughter Nancy E Moore. They are referred to ten years later on the 1880 census, after Nancy's death, as the brother and sister of Nnacy's brother, Isaac F Moore, who is head of house with his widowed mother, Delilah. If they were illegitimate, calling them siblings would be a great way to cover. Regarding the children being the illegitimate children of Nancy, I received the following e mail from Teri Allred on Ancestry.com in November, 2014: 'My grandmother lived to be 106. She was about 45 when her grandfather, Jarvis Cane Moore, died in the 1940s. He was pretty old, too. Jarvis was Lewis and Delilah. Anyway, I was puzzled by census records saying Deliah was the mother of those two children so my cousins and grandmother are the sources for the mother of those two children. I don't think we found the verification in birth records but will check. Thanks for contacting me.' The source for the death of Nancy E Moore is Lawrence, Ohio County death 1868-1938. On her 1874 death she is listed as age 34 and single and born in Lawrence County, where she was actually born in Virginia. This is likely a mistake. There are other examples of my ancestors from Lawrence County being listed in the Lawrence, Ohio County Death records as dying in Lawrence County when it is documented that they were born in Virginia. One example is William Martin, born 1794. He is listed as being born in Aid, Lawrence, Ohio when he was born in Bedford County, Virginia, as per the 1850 and 1860 census records. The absence of children John N Moore and Eliza J Moore on the 1870 census, when they would have been ten and thirteen respectively, implies an early death for both. They cannot be found living anywhere else in the county. There are two marriages for a John Moore and Eliza Moore in Lawrence County during in the 70's and 80's, but there is no reason (or evidence) to connect these two marriages with the children of Lewis and Delilah Moore. It is likely that they died prior to 1870.
