The following obituary from the Oregonian gives supplementary material: 'Mrs. Effie Brandes, wife of Otto F. Brandes, died yesterday at her home, 320 ½ Tenth street, at the age of 51 years. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. F. N. Shurtleff and was born in Polk County February 2. 1867. She came to Portland with her parents two years later and resided here ever since. Besides her husband, she leaves a wide circle of friends and other relatives. Mrs. Brandes was a life-long member of the Unitarian Church from which place the funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 o'clock.' The Oregonian, 17 Jul 1918, p 11.
