Note: ohnson. For future reconstruction of the early family of William Johnson (his parents and siblings) Thomas Johnson, living in Lawrence township, Lawrence County, was long a person of interest as a brother. He was born between 1812 and 1815 according to the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Lawrence County census records, on which William is also recorded on the 1860 and 1870, which would put him in the position of older sibling. Another important connection is that his son, Robert Johnson, married Emily J. McKnight, the step child of William Johnson and daughter of Cordellia/Surilda Ann Martin and James H. McKnight. Another further connection is finding William Johnson living next door to this Robert Johnson (presumably his nephew) and Eliza Johnson, widow (presumably his sister in law), in the 1880 Lawrence County census. In addition, I found 1 selling of land purchased by Thomas and Eliza Johnson in 1858 for 86 acres in sec. 22, twp 3, range 17 but no transaction of where he bought this piece. Therefore, I checked the online land patent site at: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx#searchByTypeIndex=0&searchTabIndex=0 and typed in Thomas for Lawrence Co., Ohio. This is where he got the land on 8-5-1837. I then cross-referenced land patents for William Johnson in Lawrence and he sold some land on the exact same date, and same sec, twp, and range as Thomas, so we know for sure that piece bought by Thomas was William's. Thomas is also buried near William in the same small rural Ross Cemetery in Lawrence County, Ohio. Thomas Johnson also named his first son William. Another interesting point is that Robert named a later son Benjamin, which could be after a father or uncle, as there is a Benjamin Johnson in the 1830 and 1840 Lawrence County census. While there is no primary evidence, it is on this strong and consistent circumstantial evidence that I have connected Thomas as a brother of William Johnson. I have a hunch, but nothing more at present, that Margaret 'Johnston', born abt 1814 who married Welcome Martin in Lawrence County (see under their notes on this tree) may be a sister of William and Thomas. According to both (2) of Thomas, Sr.'s discharge papers from the Civil War (in possession of Neil Rutman 2014), he was born in Kanawha Co., WV. He served first in Co. C, 5th WV Inf., then reenlisted with his sons, in Co. G., 1st WV Inf. He is listed in this 1864 document as Thomas Johnson Sr. and 44 years of age. This age is much younger than that given on the census listings. In 2018 I discovered I have lost this document which cites birthplace as Kanawha County, but this service is confirmed by "United States Records of Headstones of Deceased Union Veterans, 1879-1903," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V6HW-3Q5 : 12 March 2018), Thomas Johnson, 01 Nov 1875; citing , Lawrence, Ohio, NARA microfilm publication M1845 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 11; FHL microfilm 2,155,586. Name Thomas Johnson Event Type Cemetery Event Date 01 Nov 1875 Event Place Lawrence, Ohio On consulting the original further data says 'Thomas Johnson, Private, Co. C, 5th Reg., West Virginia Inf., cemetery Perry Tp., Lawrence County, OH, death March 1 1875.' As Thomas' discharge papers list his birthplace as Kanawha County, Virginia, that would be a logical place to begin to look for civil or church birth and death records among Johnsons during the period 1800-1820 to extend the records of this family. Another point to consider while searching is that Thomas' name is spelled "Johnson" in the 1860 and 1870 Lawrence County census, but is spelled "Johnston" in the 1850 Lawrence County census. Both spellings should be searched. The source for the birth and death dates of Eliza, Thomas' wife, Malinda, and Jacob are headstones inscriptions from the Ross cemetery, Lawrence, Lawrence, Ohio. The source for the maiden name of Eliza Lewis Johnson is the Lawrence County marriage record of son, Robert Johnson, to his second wife, Sarah Duteil. The source for the death date and location of Thomas Sr. is Records of Deaths Lawrence County, Ohio, 1868-1938, ledger 1, p. 134. He is listed as 65 years, 9 months, and 10 days. Eliza Johnson filed for benefits as a Civil War widow on June 21, 1880. U.S., Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934 Roll Number: T288_246 CHILDREN: The source for the wife and marriage of Thomas Johnson Jr. is the 1870 Lawrence County census report. Thomas Jr. is living next door to father Thomas and mother Eliza. There are no children in the home of Thomas Jr. in 1870. "United States Census, 1870," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M62Y-7T9 : accessed 29 August 2015), Thomas Johnson, Ohio, United States; citing p. 4, family 22, NARA microfilm publication M593 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 552,730. The source for the married name of Malinda is her tombstone inscription in the Ross cemetery as Malinda Corn, and verified by her appearance on the 1880 and 1910 Lawrence County census with husband, Granville Corn. These census records are the source for the birth state and birth date of Granville. The source for the death of Malinda Johnson Corn is Ohio, Deaths, 1908-1932, 1938-2007. There is a Civil War Draft Registration Card for Thomas Johnson, his sons Thomas Jr. and William, and Thomas' brother's (William) son, Andrew. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA); Washington, D.C.; Consolidated Lists of Civil War Draft Registration Records (Provost Marshal General's Bureau; Consolidated Enrollment Lists, 1863-1865); Record Group: 110, Records of the Provost Marshal General's Bureau (Civil War); Collection Name: Consolidated Enrollment Lists, 1863-1865 (Civil War Union Draft Records); ARC Identifier: 4213514; Archive Volume Number: 4 of 4. The source for the marriage of Eliza Johnson and Richard Pemberton is "Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-1994," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XDW8-SZ8 : accessed 15 Dec 2013), Richard M. Pemberton and Eliza A. Johnson, 17 Apr 1876; citing Lawrence, Ohio, United States, reference pg 111; FHL microfilm 317719. The source for the death information on Benjamin Johnson is his Kentucky State Death Certificate, Kentucky. Kentucky Birth, Marriage and Death Records - Microfilm (1852-1910). Microfilm rolls #994027-994058. Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, Frankfort, Kentucky. This document lists his parents as Tom Johnson and Liza Lewis. The informant is Mrs. Malinda Smith. This is most likely the daughter, Malinda Nethercott, on the 1880 census. She is listed as age 29 and widowed. Benjamin's age is given as 76 (scribbled over with corrections) and 23 days which would put his birthdate at about 1849. This looks hastily written, and the 76 years and 23 days are not in the exact locations they should be. His birth year is 1847 on the 1910 census, 1851 on the 1920 census, and 1847 and 1846 on the 1850 and 1860 Lawrence County census' respectively. I taken the average and entered 1847 as his birth year. I have disregarded the 1920 census as inaccurate, as he appears on the 1850 census.
Note: At present (May 2014) no parents have been found for William and Thomas J
