Note: udwig came about in a circuitous way. I discovered a Public Member Family Tree on Ancestry.com which had an Esther Hettie Ludwig born in 1837 married to a Francis Marks (Marcks), both of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. As there were NO OTHER Esther Ludwigs born near 1837 on the 1850 or 1860 census' in either Lehigh or Northampton Counties, other than the daughter of David Christian and Lydia Ludwig, this connection was one of interest. I found this couple on the 1880 Lehigh County census records: Francis J Marcks United States Census, 1880 Name Francis J Marcks Event Type Census Event Year 1880 Event Place South Whitehall, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, United States Gender Male Age 46 Marital Status Married Race White OccupationFarmer Relationship to Head of Household Self Relationship to Head of Household (Original) Self Birth Year (Estimated) 1834 Birthplace Pennsylvania, United States Father's Birthplace Pennsylvania, United States Mother's Birthplace Pennsylvania, United States Francis J Marcks Self M 46 Pennsylvania, United States Hettie Marcks Wife F 45 Pennsylvania, United States John Fatsinger Other M 18 Pennsylvania, United States Milton Marcks Son M 19 Pennsylvania, United States Reuben Marcks Brother M 45 Pennsylvania, United States Rosa Krauss Other F 17 Pennsylvania, United States Katie Marcks Mother F 75 Pennsylvania, United States CITING THIS RECORD "United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MWN7-Q98 : accessed 13 September 2015), Francis J Marcks, South Whitehall, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, United States; citing enumeration district 199, sheet 486D, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 1147; FHL microfilm 1,255,147. The John Fatsinger on this census must be a relative of Esther/Hettie's mother, who was a born Fatzinger. This document is also the source for the name of Francis' mother, Katie. The death record of Hettie Marks lists her as Hettie Marks born Ludwig, thus establishing the wife of Hettie Marks/Marcks as Esther Ludwig. Name: Hettie Marks Ludwig Birth Date: 11 Dec 1835 Event Type: Burial Death Date: abt 1884 Age at Death: 49 Burial Date: 7 Aug 1884 Burial Place: Allentown, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, USA Spouse Name: Frane Marks Denomination: United Church of Christ Organization Name: Salem United Church of Christ Source Citation Historical Society of Pennsylvania; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Collection Name: Historic Pennsylvania Church and Town Records; Reel: 583 Source Information: Ancestry.com. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Historical Society of Pennsylvania. This record is the source for the birth, and burial dates of Esther/Hettie. However, according to her headstone cited below the date listed here as burial date is actually her death date. Further confirmation of the birth and death dates of Esther/ Hettie and Francis Marks are their headstones as found on FindaGrave.com online. Further information on this couple including their marriage date and place, and names of the parents of Francis come from an e mail from distant cousin, Ed Ludwig in 2015, part of whichI quote: "The original document I located which provided the link between Hetty and Francis was an indenture dealing with the sale of David Ludwig’s (one son of Frantz Joseph Ludwig) farm after his death. His other children, including my direct ancestor Joseph Ludwig, agreed to sell the farm to their brother, incidentally also named Francis. The indenture (transcription attached) was dated April 5, 1887 and mentions both Milton and Francis Marks (Hetty was deceased, so her portion of the inheritance was passed on to Francis Marks and Milton, their son). From that information, I researched church records on Ancestry.com and found the death records for both Hetty and Francis. The records, of the Salem United Church of Christ in Allentown, PA included their dates of birth, death, and marriage. Hetty, born December 11, 1835, married November 4, 1860, and died August 7, 1884, maiden name Ludwig; Francis, born May 10, 1834 and died September 28, 1891, parents Jonathan and Catherine.
