Notes
a. Note: rcer County census. Source Citation: Year: 1880; Census Place: West Salem, Mercer, Pennsylvania; Roll: 1156; Family History Film: 1255156; Page: 582B; Enumeration District: 235; Image: 0278. Another source is the biography of Ephraim Ludwig found in 'The History of Mercer County,' published 1909, pp. 681-682.
Further documentation was had from the 1900 Pennsylvania census at Source Citation: Year: 1900; Census Place: Delaware, Mercer, Pennsylvania; Roll: 1440; Page: 5A; Enumeration District: 0132; FHL microfilm: 1241440.
Ephraim was first married to Anna Belle Catharine Stull and appears as such on the 1870 Pennsylvania census as E C Ludwig with daughter Isabelle. He next married Matilda Foulk and appears with her on the 1880, 1900 and 1910 Pennsylvania census reports. Their children were Orestes Abram and Adessa A. The source for the 1876 marriage is the 1900 Pennsylvania census. The source for the name of her father is the biography of Ephraim Ludwig found in 'The History of Mercer County,' published 1909, pp. 681-682. Additional information on the parents of Anna Belle Catharine Stull is the 1870 census cited here wherein David Stull and Lucinda Stull, the age of the parents of Anna Belle, are residing with her and husband Ephraim.
The source for the death of Anna Belle and infant daughter Anna B Ludwig is their joint headstone in the Rock Ridge cemetery, Greenville, Mercer, Pennsylvania which contains birth and death dates.
The source for the marriage date to second wife Matilda Foulk, her birthdate and location, and the names of her parents is the biography of Ephraim Ludwig found in 'The History of Mercer County,' published 1909, pp. 681-682. There is conflicting information on the 1900 and 1910 census reports for Ephraim's second wife, Matilda. The 1900 census states that Matilda has given birth to two children and that two are still living- obviously Orestes Abram and Addessa. These are the children of Matilda and Ephraim. The 1910 census states that Matilda is the mother of six children and that only three are living! This refers to all children borne by Matilda. She was first married to a Harvey Jones by whom she had four children- Mary, Emma, and Colman (all deceased prior to 1900)- and Charles Jones. The math adds up. The source for this information on Matilda's first marriage and children is the biography of Ephraim Ludwig found in 'The History of Mercer County,' published 1909, pp. 681-682. This is also the source for the birthplace of Matilda as Liberty, Ohio. As there are three Liberty townships in Ohio I have on educated guess chosen the one in Trumbull County, Ohio which borders Mercer County, Pennsylvania, the eventual home of the Foulks and home county of the Ludwigs.
Pursuant to the above paragraph, the names of Matilda's parents on her Pennsylvania State Death Certificate are Charles Foulk and Sarah 'Riddle,' instead of Riddey.
The source for the family of Harvey W Jones and Matilda Foulk is 'The History of Mercer County, Pennsylvania (1909), p. 681. This lists the four children of Matilda Foulk by her first marriage to 'H Jones', which reads "Mary, Emma, and Colman, (all three now deceased [in 1909]): Charles Jones, a plumber, of Greenville, Pennsylvania."
Matilda was found living in 1870 in Mercer County with a H W Jones with only a daughter, Emma A, aged 1. Source Citation: Year: 1870; Census Place: West Salem, Mercer, Pennsylvania; Roll: M593_1374; Page: 163B; Image: 331; Family History Library Film: 552873. No record can be found for Mary or Colman, who may have been born between 1870 and 80 and died prior to 1880, or prior to 1870.
Charles is found living with Matilda and her second husband, Ephraim Ludwig on the 1880 census as age 10. He is the only child present from the first marriage of Matilda. He is also listed as Charles 'Ludwig.' "United States Census, 1880," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MWNJ-GX8 : accessed 28 Aug 2014), Ephreaim Ludwig, West Salem, Mercer, Pennsylvania, United States; citing sheet 582B, NARA microfilm publication T9.
All Public Member Family Trees on Ancestry.com give a death date of 1873 for Coleman, and 1888 for both Emma and Mary. They are unsourced, and 1888 for the girls might be incorrect, otherwise why don't they show up on the 1880 census or before, but these early death citations certainly help to explain Coleman and Mary's absence on the 1870 or 1880 census and Emma's (who WAS on the 1870 census) absence on the 1880 census.
The 'bef. 1876' death for Harvey and the 'bef. 1876' births for Mary and Colman are based on the 1876 marriage of Matilda to second husband Ephraim Ludwig. Mary and Colman's 'bef. 1880' is based on the possibility that they were born between 1870 and 1880 and their non-appearance on the 1880 census.
The source for the death and burial of Ephraim is Source Citation: Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Pennsylvania Veterans Burial Cards, 1929-1990; Archive Collection Number: Series 1-7; Folder Number: 288. This document says Ephraim was buried in Shenango Valley cemetery in Greenville. See document below. Further confirmation of these dates is from Ancestry.com. Web: Pennsylvania, Find A Grave Index, 1682-2012 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2012. Original data: Find A Grave. Find A Grave. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi: accessed 28 January 2013. This document says he was buried in Good Hope cemetery, West Salem, Mercer County. As there is a photo of his headstone with this latter source, the original military record may have been in error or the name of the cemetery changed, along with the possibility that West Salem and Greenville could be similar locations. The dates of birth and death are the same on each document.
  CHILDREN:
Another issue of confusion is the name Abram on the 1870 census born 1877 and Orestes A on the 1900 census. I have considered these two boys the same person due to the middle initial A on the 1900 census. Once more a confusion arises with Orestes being listed as Orestes R. on the 1910 census. I have checked the original documents and both A on the 1900 census and R on the 1910 census are clearly legible as such. I assume the R on 1910 is wrong.
Note: The reconstruction of the Ephraim Ludwig family is based on the 1880 Me
