Notes
a. Note: William died young and his marital status is uncertain. William, his father Thomas, brother Thomas, and cousin Andrew Johnson all voluntered during the Civil War. I have consulted the original of the following documents and seen all their names signed up in Lawrence County. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA); Washington, D.C.; Consolidated Lists of Civil War Draft Registration Records (Provost Marshal General's Bureau; Consolidated Enrollment Lists, 1863-1865); Record Group: 110, Records of the Provost Marshal General's Bureau (Civil War); Collection Name: Consolidated Enrollment Lists, 1863-1865 (Civil War Union Draft Records); ARC Identifier: 4213514; Archive Volume Number: 4 of 4.
The record of William's headstone lists his death as 10 Feb 1868.

William Johnson United States Records of Headstones of Deceased Union Veterans
 Name William Johnson
 Event Type Cemetery
 Event Date 10 Feb 1868
 Event Place, Lawrence, Ohio
Company C, Fifth regiment, W. Va Infantry.
We find William's headstone in the Ross cemetery in Andis, Lawrence County confirming being in Company C, Fifth regiment, W. Va Infantry. That this William Johnson is the son of Thomas and Eliza is borne out by other headstones in the same cemetery.
There are two Thomas Johnsons with undated headstones in Ross cemetery, but both from Company C, Fifth regiment, W. Va Infantry. That all three men in the same family signed up together, were in the same regiment, and buried in the same cemetery with documentation on headstones of their Civil War regiment strongly indicates that the William in this cemetery is William Johnson born 1840, son of Thomas and Eliza.
The marital status of William Johnson seems impossible to fathom as of 2016. It would have been normal for him to marry between his Civil War service and 1868 death. There are three marriages in Lawrence county of a William Johnson between 1861 and 1867, and given the odds one of these is very likely our William. Which one, on the other hand is the difficulty. He would at most have been married only a few years to any of these ladies if one of these are him and he did not survive to the 1870 census for us to identify the marriage or family by children. Nevertheless, I have by process of elimination come up with the most likely after citing them.

"Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-2013," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XD7X-MQK : accessed 21 March 2016), William Johnston and Mary O. Crawford, 22 Oct 1867; citing Lawrence, Ohio, United States, reference v9 p270; county courthouses, Ohio; FHL microfilm 317,718.
This last marriage is not our William as this William and Mary O Johnston are living in Perry townnship on the 1870 and 1880 census.
The middle 1864 marriage is the most likely. William died in 1868 and there is a Virginia Johnson living in Franklin County, Ohio on the 1870 census with a seven year old daughter, Allie. This woman appears single, and while the 1870 census does not indicate marital status, she is most likely a widow.
It may be that this is Virginia Boggs and she moved on after his death.
I have not been able to follow the first marriage of a William Johnson to a Sarah. Or at least this couple did not remain in Lawrence County.
Then, of course, William may have died single after all.
