Note: jamin Wilson is "Ohio, Deaths, 1908-1953," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XZ42-15Y : accessed 30 Nov 2014), Benjamin Wilson, 05 Aug 1923; citing Laurence, Lawrence, Ohio, reference fn 52287; FHL microfilm 1992390. The source for the marriage of Benjamin and Evaline is "Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-1997," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XD7J-CXQ : accessed 30 Nov 2014), Benjamin Wilson and Eveline Short, 12 Jul 1885; citing Lawrence, Ohio, United States, reference 152; county courthouses, Ohio; FHL microfilm 317720. The pre marriage relationship of Benjaminand Evaline can be traced through the census records. Fifteen years prior to this marriage Benjamin and Evaline are living in the same household on the 1870 Lawrence County census with Benjamin's parents. The status of twenty two year old Evaline is servant. There are no children. Household ID: 90 , Line Number: 8 , Affiliate Name: The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) , Affiliate Publication Number: M593 , GS Film number: 000552730 , Digital Folder Number: 004278430, Image Number: 00414 Five years prior to the 1885 marriage of Benjaminand Evaline they are residing in the same household on the 1880 census with Benjamin's widowed mother, and there are four children with the surname Short (Evaline's maiden name) born between 1872 and 1880. This pre marriage census finds Evaline using her maiden name Short instead of Wilson and the children of Evaline and Benjamin are also listed as Short. This assumes these children belong to Evaline and Benjamin, but there seems to be no other logical explanation. Source Citation: Year: 1880; Census Place: Lawrence, Lawrence, Ohio; Roll: 1039; Family History Film: 1255039; Page: 230D; Enumeration District: 093; Image: 0455. By the 1900 census for Benjamin and Evaline Wilson there are additional children, but the one chlid in common with this census and the 1880 is William H. He is not listed here as William Short but William H Wilson. The source for the birth year and nativity of Evaline (listed as Evaline on the 1880 and 1900 census, but Evelyn on the death certificate of Benjamin Wilson), the year of her marriage, and their children is the 1900 Ohio census. "United States Census, 1900," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MMDC-7LY : accessed 30 Nov 2014), Evaline Wilson in household of Benjamine Wilson, Lawrence Township, Lawrence, Ohio, United States; citing sheet 3A, family 42, NARA microfilm publication T623, National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C.; FHL microfilm 1241292. The 1880 census lists the birth year for Evaline as 1848. Source Citation: Year: 1880; Census Place: Lawrence, Lawrence, Ohio; Roll: 1039; Family History Film: 1255039; Page: 230D; Enumeration District: 093; Image: 0455. Evaline's joint headstone with Benjamin Wilson in the Ross cemetery in Lawrence County gives her dates as 1852-1926. I believe this is a mistake as the census records, even though they often contain errors, are consistent with 1847-1848. Even the 1870 census in which Evaline is living with her father, gives her birth year as 1848. An additional curiosity is the marriage record for Benjamin Wilson to Rachel Simpson in 1875 in Lawrence County. I have no evidence to suppose this is the same Benjamin, but there are no other Benjamin's inLawrence County at this time except for "Ohio, Marriages, 1800-1958," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XDKJ-SJG : accessed 1 February 2015), Benjamin Wilson and Rachel J. Simpson, 03 Oct 1875; citing Lawrence,Ohio, reference ; FHL microfilm 0317719 V. 11-12.
