The census records all indicate William Martin was born around 1793 in Virginia. The 1850 Census has William as 56 and born in 1794 in Virginia, and in 1860 as 68, and born in 1792 in Virginia. Source for the death of William Martin Sr. is the Record of Deaths, Lawrence Co, 1868-1939, which lists his birthplace as Aid, Lawrence, and in 1788. The age and place of birth from this record are mistakes and are both in conflict with the census records as well as what we know about his origins in Bedford County, Virginia as the son of Benjamin Martin. I have listed his birth year as 1794 in order to fit in with the approximated birth years of his siblings in the Benjamin Martin family list (See notes under Benjamin Martin).
The birth year and maiden name for Nancy are more problematic. She is listed as 44 on the 1850 Lawrence County, Ohio census (born 1806), 53 on the 1860 Lawrence County, Ohio census (born 1807), 70 on the 1870 census (born 1800), and 80 on the 1880 census (also born 1800). Whether Nancy took years off her real age in the earlier census records when she was younger, or the census taker simply rounded her age to the decade on the 1870 and 1880 records is impossible to determine. Since she marries William Martin as a widowed or divorced (abandoned?) "Mrs. Nancy Watts" in 1820, the 1800 birth year would make more sense, because if she were born around 1806 she would have been a 14 year old widow for an 1820 marriage. I suppose for this frontier part of Ohio young brides were not uncommon. The 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 census records state that Nancy was born in Virginia. The death certificate of her daughter, Serilda Martin Johnson, says Ohio, but the informant was granddaughter Nancy Ellen Johnson Moore, who gave some other faulty information on the certificate. Look for her origins in both locations.
After much thought, research, and caution I have entered Nancy's maiden name as Nance. Below follows an explanation of the difficulty in coming to that conclusion and the four reasons for doing so.
On the death certificate of my 2 great grandmother, Serilda Martin, her mother Nancy's maiden name is NANCE. The informant was my great grandmother Nancy Ellen Johnson Moore who, it must be admitted, did submit some faulty information by saying that William Martin and Nancy were both born in Ohio when they were born in Virginia. Nancy's maiden name is WATTS on the death certificate of her daughter Nancy Martin. The informant for this death certificate was again a grandaughter of Nancy who was living with her on the 1870 and 1880 census records but only remembered the married name of Watts Nancy brought to the marriage to William, not her maiden name. Nancy's maiden name is listed as DELONG on the death certificate of daughter Mary Martin Crawford. The informant is Mary's son, and Nancy's grandson Oscar Crawford. So we have Watts, DeLong, and Nance!! We can discard Watts, as we know that was a married name she brought to the marriage to William. No death certificates for other children have been found to initially tip the balance in favor of Nance or Delong.
I submit the following four reasons as strong circumstantial evidence to give Nancy the maiden name of Nance

 1. The Ohio State Death Certificate cited above of Nancy’s daughter Serilda Martin which gives her the maiden name Nance, in spite of the conflicting data of the two other Death Certificates.

 2. William and Nancy Martin are on the 1850 Lawrence township Lawrence Co census:

 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MXQJ-H8X

The next household enumerated is that of Allen Wilson, William’s nephew by his sister Sarah (see notes under Sarah Martin), in whose home William’s father, Benjamin Martin age 84, is also residing. The identity of Rebecca Wilson is interesting in that she is a Nance based on her inclusion in a document for the heirs of Daniel Nance in the Lawrence Co. Deed bk 13, pg 369, listing Rebecca Wilson, wife of Allen Wilson, as an heir.

So William Martin was living next door to his nephew Allen in whose house his father resided, and who had married a Nance. Perhaps this Rebecca Nance Wilson was the niece of Nancy, who may have been the brother of Daniel cited above (born bef. 1806). Or another way of putting it is that Nancy Martin was living next door to HER niece, Rebecca Nance.

 3. On the 1860 census William Martin and Nancy are in Aid and surrounded by five Nance families- John Nance, Banister Nance, George Nance, Wilson Nance, and Jonathan Nance. When I say surrounded I mean they appear either as the families enumerated right before or after that of William and Nancy or appear on the previous or following page. In other words, Nancy and William live close by many Nances.

 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MCL1-75V

William and Nancy are also surrounded by two McKnight families that William and Nancy's daughter Serilda (my g g grandmother) married into, and a Platt family that another of William Nancy's daughter married into. I mention this because it seems that families that intermarried are living very close to each other in Aid in 1860.

 4. On the 1880 census 80 year old widow Nancy Martin is enumerated immediately after three Nance families. They are Clinson Nance, Aaron Nance, and Henry Nance.
The last record found for Nancy Nance Martin is on the Windsor, Lawrence, Ohio 1880 census, which is the source for her 'aft. 1880' death.
William and Nancy probably had children before Jennet, but they are not living at home on the 1850 census. Some researchers include both a Jesse and Rebecca as first and second children in this family, but do not list sources or documentation. On the 1850 Lawrence County, Ohio census there was a married Rebecca Wilson, born abt. 1824, living next door to William Martin Sr. In Rebecca Wilson's household Benjamin Martin, William Sr.'s father, age 84, was living. Source Citation: Year: 1850; Census Place: Lawrence, Lawrence, Ohio; Roll: M432_701; Page: 428B; Image: 639. While some have listed Rebecca Wilson's maiden name as Martin she was actually a Nance, based on her inclusion in a document for the heirs of Daniel Nance in the Lawrence Co. Deed bk 13, pg 369, listing Rebecca Wilson, wife of Allen Wilson, as an heir. It was Allen Wilson who was the grandson of Benjamin Martin through his mother, Sarah Martin, husband of Henry Wilson (Lawrence County History Book, 1990).
There was also a Jesse Martin in Lawrence County, born abt. 1820, living very close to William Martin Sr on the 1850 census (Source Citation: Year: 1850; Census Place: Lawrence, Lawrence, Ohio; Roll: M432_701; Page: 433B; Image: 648). This may have been a son of William, but two things should be taken into consideration before connecting him without hard evidence. When looking at the 1830 Lawrence County census one finds a William "Marton" living in Mason township who had only one male child between the ages of 1 and 5 was, which accounts for son Lorenzo. Also, William Sr.'s brother, David, was also in the county and married, probably having children during the same period. I have left Jesse off the family group in the absence of hard proof, and further research is necessary.
  CHILDREN:
The sources for the assumed birth towns of the children are the 1830 and 1840 Lawrence County, Ohio census, in which William Martin resided in Upper Township. By the 1850 and 1860 census' he lived in Lawrence Township, and whether the births straddled the two locations is not important. They are only a few miles from each other. With the exception of Lorenzo, Serilda, and Nancy, whose birth dates in the case of Serilda and Nancy come from their Ohio State death certificates, and in the case of Lorenzo, from the Isaac and Josephine Martin Family Bible, the birth dates of the other children are approximate. They are based on the ages listed in the 1850 and 1860 census', which vary in some cases by three years. I have averaged these. The order of the children listed on both census' is the same.
Information for the deaths of daughters Serilda, Nancy, and Mary come from their Ohio State death certificates.
The marriage certificate of Mary Martin is from Marriage books of Lawrence County, Ohio, Bk 8 pg 397. There is a record of the marriage of a William Martin in the same Marriage books to an Eliza Jane McClaskey which should not be used for the William Martin in this family. He married her at the same time that son William Martin might have married, but this is not the same William Martin. Upon tracing his death certificate to Arkansas City, Kansas, (thanks to the ever present name of his wife Eliza Jane), it was found that he was born of Irish Martin parents, and just coincidentally married in Lawrence County.
Daughter Nancy had a child, Olive (Olla), born in 1865, but was not married. Olla is on the 1870 Aid, Lawrence, Ohio census with her mother Nancy, and grandmother Nancy. And Nancy's middle initial, "J", is from the 1880 Windsor, Lawrence, Ohio census. I believe this Nancy is living as a boarder in Aid, Lawrence, Ohio on the 1920 census along with her single nephew, Oscar Crawford. Source Citation: Year: 1920; Census Place: Aid, Lawrence, Ohio; Roll: T625_1400; Page: 10B; Enumeration District: 93; Image: 396. See notes under Nancy Martin
Nothing is known of the history for Jennet, William Jr., or Lucinda Martin. Lucinda's non appearance in the family of William Martin Sr. on the 1860 census suggests either an early death or a marriage before age 14, for which there is no record in the Lawrence County Marriage Books. Her early death is more likely. There is a marriage for a Lucinda Martin in the neighboring county of Jackson in 1867 to a John Whetstone. On following this family through the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census records it is evident that this is a different Lucinda Martin, as she was born in 1835 on all records, and in Pennsylvania.
There are two Lawrence County marriages for a William Martin- one in 1864 and the other in 1873 and at present (2015) it is not possible to connect either of the two to the son of William and Nancy Martin. See notes under William.
The source for the 1861 marriage of Eleanor Martin to Isaac Platt is the Lawrence County, Ohio Marriage book 7, page 109. There is a discrepancy between the name Eleanor Martin, by which she was known on the 1850 and 1860 census living under the roof of her father William, and the name Ellen Martin on the marriage certificate. To assure this was the same woman a search was made of the Lawrence, Gallia, and Scioto County census' for 1850 and 1860, looking for an Ellen Martin under another family. None was found. The marriage certificate has a large "John Hancock" signature showing "Wm. Martin" as a witness. A search was also made for any other William Martins in those counties, and only one came up, who had no children named Ellen on the 1850 and 1860 census'. The signature is obviously that of Eleanors/Ellen's father, William Martin of Lawrence Township. Further evidence that Eleanor and Ellen are the same person is the presence of a 9 month old Josephine Martin on the 1860 census, living in the same house as William Martin and daughter, Eleanor. This Josephine Martin, born abt. 1859, is the oldest child of Ellen and Isaac Platt on the 1870 and 1880 census. On these latter census records she is listed as Josephine Platt. As the marriage between Ellen and Isaac did not occur until 1861 and Josephine was born abt. 1859, it is assumed she was illegitimate. Of further interest is that on the 1860 census (before the marriage of Ellen and Isaac and after the birth of Josephine) there is a Platt family living exactly next door to William Martin's family which includes a 19 year old son, Isaac Platt. Based on this strong circumstantial evidence, I have connected the Eleanor Martin, daughter of William Martin, of the 1850 and 1860 census to Ellen Martin and Isaac Platt of the 1861 marriage certificate. The source for the death and burial dates and locations for Ellen Platt is her obituary in the Ironton Register, Aug 2, 1906.
Lorenzo D Martin is not found on the 1860 census, but he had left Ohio by 1863, in which year we find him registering for his Civil Ward Draft card in Hardin County, Illinois, and listed as single. Source Citation: National Archives and Records Administration (NARA); Washington, D.C.; Consolidated Lists of Civil War Draft Registration Records (Provost Marshal General's Bureau; Consolidated Enrollment Lists, 1863-1865); Record Group: 110, Records of the Provost Marshal General's Bureau (Civil War); Collection Name: Consolidated Enrollment Lists, 1863-1865 (Civil War Union Draft Records); ARC Identifier: 4213514; Archive Volume Number: 2 of 3. We find him married to Sarah E. Barr (born abt 1837 in Kentucky) on the 1870 and 1880 Hardin County, Illinois census'. Sarah Barr was evidently widowed or divorced by abt 1865. We find Sarah earlier (born abt 1837 in Kentucky) on the 1860 Hardin County, Illinois census married to a Samuel Barr, with only one child, Josephine. Josephine and another child, Austin, are listed with the surname Martin ten years later on the 1870 Hardin County census after Sarah had married Lorenzo Dow Martin. This is likely a mistake on the part of the census taker, and they should have been listed as Barrs. The 1863 Civil War Draft card of Lorenzo D. Martin lists him as 'single', so he could not logically be the father of either Josephine or Austin. Source Citation: National Archives and Records Administration (NARA); Washington, D.C.; Consolidated Lists of Civil War Draft Registration Records (Provost Marshal General's Bureau; Consolidated Enrollment Lists, 1863-1865); Record Group: 110, Records of the Provost Marshal General's Bureau (Civil War); Collection Name: Consolidated Enrollment Lists, 1863-1865 (Civil War Union Draft Records); ARC Identifier: 4213514; Archive Volume Number: 2 of 3. He is listed with his wife and family on the 1870 Hardin County, Illinois census as 'Lorenza' D Martin, b. Ohio 1828, and on the 1880 Hardin County with his family listed as Dow Martin. The date for the marriage and death of Lorenzo Dow comes from the Isaac and Josephine Martin Family Bible. Digital copies of the pages are in the possession of Neil Rutman (2012).

Prior to finding this document I had always based General's approximate birth year on the 1850 Lawrence township census cited below, which lists General as twelve years old (born 1838) but this might be a few years off.
"United States Census, 1850," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MXQJ-H82 : accessed 30 August 2015), General Martin in household of William Martin, Lawrence, Lawrence, Ohio, United States; citing family 10, NARA microfilm publication M432 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).
While there is a discrepancy between the two records of five years for the birth year, the likelihood that there would have been more than one General Martin of the same age in Lawrence township, Lawrence County is slim. Given this, and the fact that his siblingss ages on the 1850 census are also off by a few years (based on their Death Certificates- Serilda off by three years, Nancy J by two years,) I have concluded that both records- the Death Record and the 1850 census- are for the same individual
