Marriage:
Notes
a. Note: PARENTS: The source for the first marriage of Otis to Elizabeth Earles is "Ohio Marriages, 1800-1958," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XDJZ-QZ3 : 8 December 2014), Oty Martin and Elizabeth Earls, 04 Aug 1822; citing Lawrence,Ohio, reference ; FHL microfilm 0317716 V. 1-5.
The source for the 'bef. 1849' death of Elizabeth Earles is based on the record of Otis' second marriage below
The source for the second marriage of Otis to Elizabeth Walls is "Ohio Marriages, 1800-1958," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XDJZ-QZ7 : 8 December 2014), Oty Martin and Elizabeth Walls, 26 May 1849; citing Lawrence,Ohio, reference ; FHL microfilm 0317716 V. 1-5.
It is not known if this was the first marriage for Elizabeth Walls.
The US Census Mortality Schedule Index lists the death of Otis as Dec 1850 at age 49, farmer, cause of death brain fever). This would put the birth of Otis around 1801. "United States Census (Mortality Schedule), 1850," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M36N-2LX : 4 August 2017), Otz Martin, Lawrence county, Lawrence, Ohio, United States; citing line 32, NARA microfilm publication T655 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 1,602,338.
As Otis died in late 1849 he is not listed with family and children on the 1850 census. The reconstruction of his family has taken place as per the notes of his children below.
The birth years of the children, except for Benjamin Bennett, are approximations based on the average of several census records.
  CHILDREN:
As both Otis and his second wife died just prior to the 1850 census, which would have listed the entire family in Lawrence County, no record of his children was available until finding the following death record of Benjamin Bennet Martin which lists identifying parents. "Ohio, Deaths, 1908-1953," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X8G3-D7Y : accessed 05 Sep 2014), Benganin Bennett Martin, 16 May 1928; citing Lawrence Twp., Lawrence, Ohio, reference fn 34588; FHL microfilm 1991299.
His mother is listed as Elizabeth Earles, and the father is incorrectly listed as James O Martin, not Otis Whitrock Martin (see paragraph below). This certificate lists Elizabeth Earles birthplace as Ohio rather than Virginia, as some genealogies have. The use of the name Elizabeth Earles as mother was the determining clue in the puzzle of beginning the reconstruction of the family of Otis and his Elizabeth. While the father's name is not correct, the informant on the death certificate was at least familiar enough with the family to use the name of a relative, that of Benjamin's brother, James O Martin (see paragraph below).
Recently orphaned Bennet Martin, age ten, is residing in the home of older brother William Martin, with siblings Oliver, Elisha, James O, and Ely. That these are likely siblings of Benjamin Bennet and not children of William and his nineteen year old wife is based on a look at the ages. "United States Census, 1850," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MXQJ-41C : 12 April 2016), Bennet Martin in household of William Martin, Windsor, Lawrence, Ohio, United States; citing family 115, NARA microfilm publication M432 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).
  William Martin M 27 Ohio
 Harriet Martin F 19 Ohio
 Oliver Martin M 18 Ohio
 Elisha Martin M 16 Ohio
 James O Martin M 14 Ohio
 Bennet Martin M 10 Ohio
 Ely Martin F 5 Ohio
Benjamin B is found living on the 1860 census with the family of Henry Wilson (there were numerous marriages between Wilsons and Martins in my tree during this period in Lawrence County) in Lawrence township. Along with him is James O Martin again, so close in age that gives credence to his being a sibling. "United States Census, 1860," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MCL1-4W4 : accessed 30 Nov 2014), Henry Wilson, Lawrence Township, Lawrence, Ohio, United States; from "1860 U.S. Federal Census - Population," Fold3.com; p. 88, household ID 591, NARA microfilm publication M653; NARA microfilm publication M653. National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C.; FHL microfilm 803997.
I suggest the list of children on the 1850 census from Oliver down to Ely are children of Otis Wihitrock Martin and Elizabeth Earles, living with oldest brother William Martin after the death of both parents. (William Martin and family appear on this 1850 Lawrence County census transcribed as William 'Martha' probably due to the difficulty of reading the text. "United States Census, 1850," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MXQJ-41Q : accessed 30 Nov 2014), William Martin, Windsor, Lawrence, Ohio, United States; citing family 115, NARA microfilm publication M432, NARA microfilm publication M432, National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C.
William was born, according to this census, in 1823, and Otis and his first wife, Elizabeth Earles, were married in 1822, as per the marriage books in Lawrence County, Ohio. The Harriet on this list is his wife and not a younger sister, based on the 1860 Lawrence Country census in which they live as husband and wife.
Another source for the marriage of William and Harriet is "Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-1997," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XD7F-TQM : accessed 07 Sep 2014), William H. Martin and Harriet Shattuck, 09 Dec 1849; citing Lawrence, Ohio, United States, reference cn 143; FHL microfilm 317716. This is the source for William's middle initial and the maiden name of Harriet. The source for the information on the mother of Harriet is her residing with William's family on the 1860 census.   This is the source of the partial reconstruction of the family and children of Otis Martin and Elizabeth Earles. I suspect that due to the gaps in ages, some children died and children between William and Mary Jane had left home by the 1850 census.
The source for the death and birth location of James O Martin is "Ohio, Deaths and Burials, 1854-1997," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F6N6-CZ6 : accessed 05 Sep 2014), James O. Martin, 23 Sep 1893; citing Elizabeth Twp. Lawrence, Ohio, reference BK1 PG592 CN478; FHL microfilm 317744.
The daughter of Otis Whitrock, Ely, entered on the 1850 census cited above at age five is, like her older brothers, living in the home of eldest sibling, William Martin due to the death of both parents. Ten years later on the 1860 census cited above, two of these brothers immediately her senior in age, James O and Benjamin B, are still together and living in the home of Henry Wilson, though this younger sister, Ely, is not present. While there are many explanations as to why this fifteen year old girl is not in the home with her older brothers on the 1860 census, the most likely is that Ely died between 1850 and 1860. The source of the name Ely is a mystery, though it could be an abbreviation, or an endearment, for Elizabeth.
On the other hand there Is an Elizabeth Martin, aged 15, on the 1860 Lawrence County census living with a family of Sanders. Could this be her?
