There are several unsourced or undocumented Public Member Family Trees on Ancestry.com which connect John P. Freeman and wife Rachel. On investigating this possible marriage I found a death certificate for a child of a John Payton Freeman and Rachel 'Frieland', Amanda Florence Smith, in Illinois. John Payton Freeman's birth state is listed as Kentucky.
Further investigation led me to the Stark County Illinois marriage records for 1854 which state, 'Nov. 17. John P. Freeman and Rachel Freeland, by John B. Fast, M. G.' Stark County, Illinois Genealogy and History, MARRIAGE RECORD 1831-1866. [Source: CHAPTER IV., "DOCUMENTS AND BIOGRAPHY PERTAINING TO THE SETTLEMENT AND PROGRESS OF STARK COUNTY, ILLINOIS"] Transcribed by Kim Torp, ©2007. This implies that John P left Lawrence County shortly after 1850.
Looking for this couple on the 1860 and 1870 census led me first to the 1860 Missouri census where a J P Freeman and Rachel are found living in Putnam County, Missouri. J P was born in Kentucky abt. 1831. The children are Joseph and Amanda.
John and Rachel have returned to Illinois by 1870 where they are once again in Stark County listed as John P Freeman and Rachel. John's birth state is Kentucky and the birth year is 1830. The children present are once again Joseph and 'Manda,' though now ten years older. These two census records are the source for the birth year and location of Rachel Freeland. Of special note is that some of the Public Member Family Trees cited above give 'Parker' as the middle name of John. The death certificate listed above gives 'Payton.' As the Public Member FamilyTrees are not sourced and death certificate information is only as good as the informant, I leave his name John P Freeman.
