a. Note: as a computer generated 'hint' from Ancestry.com. While these hints have been correct and surprisingly insightful the majority of times, it is not always good documentary evidence to use a 'hint' as proof. Upon further investigation documentary proof was found which connects Emma Pomeroy to the family of Margaret Johnson Martin, and Margaret's son William Martin. On Margaret Johnson Martin's 1865 Application for a Mother's Pension there are two pages on which her son William signed as a witness, along with an Emma Pomeroy. As Emma and William Martin were the oldest children of Margaret to accompany her in her removal from Ohio to Iowa, it is strong circumstantial evidence that Emma Pomeroy is Emma Martin. The birth state and year for Emma Pomeroy on the 1860 Clinton County, Iowa census and the 1870 Dallas County, Iowa census match those already known for Emma Martin.

These census records above are the source for the birth state and year of Francis Pomeroy.
The 'bef. 1858' marriage date for Emma and Francis is based on the age of their two year old son, William, on the 1860 Iowa census above.
The source for the 'bef. 1877' death date of Emma Martin Pomeroy is finding Francis remarried to Elseta (Electa?) on the 1885 Iowa census with a daughter Mary, who proves to be their biological daughter (see notes below). Ancestry.com. Iowa, State Census Collection, 1836-1925 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2007. Original data: Microfilm of Iowa State Censuses, 1856, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915, 1925 as well various special censuses from 1836-1897 obtained from the State Historical Society of Iowa via Heritage Quest.
This Elseta is most likely the widow of William Martin, the brother of Francis' deceased wife, Emma. Electa Vandaron married William Martin and is found with him on the 1870 Iowa census (see notes under William). She is from New York and born abt. 1843. Her appearance as Elseta Pomeroy on the 1885 census cited above gives her birth state as New York and birth year as 1843. The permutation of her name should not give cause for concern. Her name is spelled variously on her marriage record to William Martin as Elieta and Electric.
Another bit of evidence that Electa Vandoran (widow of William Martin) married Francis Pomeroy is finding the marriage record of their daughter Mary, who is listed on the 1885 census cited above. This marriage record lists the parents as Francis Pomeroy and Alleta (permutated once again) Vandrin (which is pretty close to Vandoran). Pomeroy in entry for Henry Perryman and Mary Pomeroy, 23 Jun 1894; citing Maquoketa Jackson, Iowa, United States; FHL microfilm 1255478.
