Note: ikely that he came with his wife Anna Maria and first son, Johannes. Name: Johannes Reinschmidt Arrival Year: 1753 Arrival Place: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Source Publication Code: 8125.4 Primary Immigrant: Reinschmidt, Johannes Annotation: Date and port of arrival. Extracted from vol. 30:39 stored at the state archive in Koblenz and ship lists 209 and 211 which appear in Pennsylvania German Pioneers (Strassburger and Hinke - see PILI, first edition, source nos. 9041 and 9042.) This article Source Bibliography: SCHROEDER, HENNING. "Emigrants from Daaden, Rheinland-Palatinate, 1753." In The Palatine Immigrant (Palatines to America, Columbus, OH), vol. 12:1 (1987), pp. 23-25. Page: 25 The source of the 1728 birth year for Johannes is the above document which lists his age as 25 on the original. Ninety year old descendant Paul M. Rinesmith of Florida e mailed me the names of the spouses for Johannes and Jacob from Johannes Sr's first marriage. He loosely cited in 2016 as his sources the following: "PA Births Lehigh Co 1734-1800 by John T. Humphrey (9 Records of Ziegel Church in Weissenberg twp; 16. Records of Schlosser's Reformed church in North Whitehall tp 20., records of the Lowhill Luthern and Reformed congregation in Lowhill twp) 28." I do not know if these are the sources for the names of the spouses of Johannes Jr. and Jacob, but have used these names, nonetheless. Paul continues by kindly e mailing me in 2016 unsourced death dates and locations for both Johannes and Jacob, and more unsourced marital information, which I have not included in this tree: "John (Jr) b 1753 Lehigh Co, Pa d 1810 m Susanna Catherine Zimmerman b Oct 1760 d aft 1830, daughter of Jurg Zimmerman and Anna Elizabeth. Children; John III b 1794 Lehigh Co PA m abt 1813 to Elizabeth Garber; Jonathan b 11 Jul 1796 Lehigh Co PA, d 23 Mar 1867 Blain Toboyne PA m Mary Magdalene Hetrick; Henry b 1793 m Elizabeth Garber; George b Feb 1798 d 19 Feb 12860 m Elizabeth Earl 15 Oct 1828; Elizabeth ???; Susan ???My information is from several sources Roots web, descendants of the above, Cemetary records of Toboyne county and census records. Jacob Reinshmit m Elizabeth ? one child John George christened 28 apr 1792 Berks Co Pa Wesnersville Friedens New Alemangel -White church Luthern Record 2` This family possibly moved to Perry county with Johannes Jr." The assumption is that the Jacob above is the son of Johannes Reimschmidt Sr. A logical one. The initial reconstruction of the family of Johannes or John Reinschmidt is a rather complicated undertaking. Johannes married Anna Maria Gressel, nee Hantwerck in 1774, and his last three children, Henry, Maria, and Leonhardt, were undoubtedly hers. The eight children prior to that (and there may have been more who died without record) I have listed under his first wife, Anna Maria. The source for the name of the first wife is also from Paul M. Rinesmith listed above. It is even possible that Johannes Heinrich, who I have listed as first child under second wife, Anna Maria, could have been the son of Jacob Gressel, her first husband, and that she could have been pregnant with the child of her deceased husband at the time of her marriage to Johannes Reinschmidt. It is only a conjecture. Furthermore, contrary to the popular opinion of most of Johannes' family trees written or posted, as already stated, the 11 children here listed may not all be the issue of Johannes and first wife Anna Maria, and second wife Anna Maria Hantwerck. Johannes was married to an Anna Maria who bore him eight children) before his 1774 marriage to Anna Maria Hantwerck (who bore him three more). This second Anna Maria was the widow Gressel at the time of her marriage to John (see notes below). The eleven children in his family (the list coming from his 1790 Estate file) could be a combination of issue from John's two wives and even any children Anna Maria herself brought to the marriage and who may have adopted the name Reinschmidt. The following 2014 correspondence is from Dick Musselman, the genealogist who did the research below. These communications were in the formative stages of research and raise many interesting questions about the family relationships, most of which have been resolved in 2016. For the complete file contact the holder, Neil Rutman: "Neil, I can see where this entry in my report may have led to some confusion. There were two different documents in the OC file. The 20 Jun.1787 document listed the appointment of Andrew Miller and Henry Hoffman as the guardians of the three minor children of John Reinschmit: Henry, Leonard and Maria. The 24 Dec.1790 document mentioned the widow Ann Mary and the 11 children listed in my report. It listed John as the eldest son. The death date of John Reinschmit was not found in this file. We know it was before 20 Jun.1787. However, based upon the information in this file, I do not know if it was one month or one year earlier. Time frames for these types of activities were not consistent and were found to range from less than a month to several years. I suspect it was determined by the dynamics of the family and the size and complexity of the estate. I believe your interpretation of the Johan Heinrich child, born in Oct.1774, is correct. For the remainder of his life, he probably used the name Henry/Heinrich as his normal everyday given name. You are also probably correct that Ann Mary Gressel was pregnant at the time of their marriage in Mar.1774, if all the reported dates are correct. (Consider this....Was she pregnant with Johannes Reinschmidt's child or Jacob Gressel's child?) Further review of the entry is where the real tough questions are raised. Ann Mary Gressel is listed as the widow of Jacob Gressel. It is possible Anna Mary had young children prior to her marriage to Johannes Reinschmidt. She was obviously capable of bearing children to Johannes, therefore she may have brought children to this marriage. It is also possible these children then adopted the surname Reinschmidt and were raised by Johannes. I have no proof of this but suggest this as a possible answer to the dilemma with the children's names and ages. It is also possible that this was a second marriage for John Reinschmidt. He may have had children from a previous marriage. Without further proof of ages, we can only speculate on these family groups. I cannot positively claim this marriage in 1774 as that of John Sr. You are correct in questioning the 5 children surviving Catharine Row who was already deceased in Dec. 1790. It seems very unlikely a female born after 1774 could have 5 children prior to 1790. Two logical solutions would be to attribute the 1774 marriage to John Jr. or find proof of children born to a previous marriage for either John Reinschmidt or Ann Mary Gressel. Dick" THE ORIGINAL DATA, RECEIVED IN OCTOBER, 2011 FROM DICK MUSSELMAN FOLLOWS: A Northampton Estate file was also found for a John Reinschmit: Estate File #1195 John Reinschmit, Heidelberg Township, 1787 Administrators: John Reinschmit, George Holder Renunciation: Mary Reinschmidt, 24 Feb.1787 (German script) Administration Bond: 1787 Inventory & Appraisement: 1787 (German script) Final Accounting: 20 Mar.1789 (Note: A review of this file found no direct references to his children nor son-in-laws.) A Northampton County Orphans Court file was associated with this Estate: Orphans Court File #128, Folder #7404 20 Jun.1787 Andrew Miller & Henry Hoffman appointed as Guardians for the following minor children of John Reinschmit: Henry, Leonard, Maria 24 Dec.1790 Widow: Ann Mary Children: John (oldest son) Jacob Samuel Simon Henry Leonard Mary Juliana (wife of John Adam Smith) Eve (wife of John Kuntz) Elizabeth (wife of George Holder) Catharine, deceased (wife of Jacob Row, leaving 5 children) With the exception of Northampton County Estate File #2308 (Nancy Reinsmith, 1805, Penn Township, daughter of Garret Rittenhouse, Administrator: Samuel Reinsmith, husband), no other early Reinsmith or Freyman Estates were found in Northampton Co. The following Lehigh County Estate files were found in the Register of Wills index: #4807 Augustus J. Reinsmith - Emmaus, 1875 #3838 Daniel Rinesmith - Washington Township, 1866 #8825 Fianna Reinsmith - Emaus, 1896 #1863 Henry Reinsmith - Weisenberg Township, 1845 #6235 Henry Reinsmith - Emaus, 1884 (same man as #7930) #7930 Henry Reinsmith - Emaus, 1884 (same man as #6235) #3788 Joseph Reinsmith - North Whitehall Township, 1866 #7943 Jonas Reinsmith - North Whitehall Township, 1893 #6941 Mary L. Reinsmith - Allentown, 1883 #8157 Solomon Reinsmith - Emaus, 1894 (Note: The following may be children or sons-in-law of John Reinschmit, Estate File #1195.) #2611 Eve Kuntz - Upper Macungie Township, 1854 #1035 John Kuntz - Lynn Township, 1831 A search of Northampton County Deeds found a Release entered in Deed Book F2, page 450 dated 10 Feb.1790: Maria Reinschmetin, widow of Heidelberg Township, daughter of the now deceased John Hantwerck, acknowledged receipt of £40 from her father’s estate. The name, Maria Reinschmet, and the fact that she is now a widow, suggests this is the widow of the John Reinschmit listed in Estate File #1195. A marriage certificate was certified on 10 Mar. 1774 by Lewis Gordon, Esq., JP, for Johannes Reinschmidt of Heidelberg Township and Ann Mary Gressel, widow of Jacob Gressel late of Heidelberg Township. The following entries were found in the church records of the Lowhill Reformed & Lutheran congregations, Lowhill Township, Lehigh Co.: Johan Heinrich, son of Johannes & Anna Maria Reinschmidt, b.5 Oct.1774, bapt. 4 Dec.1774; Sponsors: Heinrich Grumm & Catharine Handwerk (single) Maria Elisabeth, daughter of Johannes & Anna Maria Reinschmidt, b.12 Jul.1776, bapt.1 Sep.1776; Sponsors: Jacob & Maria Elisabeth Rauh Daniel, son of Samuel & Anna Margaretha Reinschmidt, b.10 Sep.1788, bapt. 26 Oct.1788; Sponsors: Simon Reinschmidt & Magdal. Redinghauss (single) Maria Magdalena, daughter of Samuel & Margaretha Reinschmidt, b.24 Oct.1791, bapt.20 Nov.1791; Sponsors: Heinrich Reinschmidt & Magdalena Klein (single) Elisabeth, daughter of Heinrich & Maria Reinschmidt, b.11 Feb.1799, bapt.14 Apr.1799; Sponsors: Johannes & Elisabeth Schmidt. The source for the after 1850 death of Leonard is finding a Lanhart Reinsmith on the 1850 Lehigh County census at age 71, which would mean a 1779 birth. This date would put him well within the range of a being a minor, as he is so designated, at the time of the 1790 settling of his father's Estate File listed above. SUMMARY: At present (2014) all 'bef. 1769' births indicate that these children were not considered minors, as were Henry, Leonard, and Maria Elizabeth, at the time of Johannes Reinschmidt's death. The 'aft. 1769' births of Henry and Leonard indicate they were minors (as listed in the estate papers) in 1790. At any rate, when this information of Dick's is read and digested certain questions come up which require further research. "Re: the origin of Elizabeth, daughter (step or natural and born probably between 1760 and 1766) of Johann Rhineschmidt/Reinschmidt/Rhinesmith and wife of George Holder (married no later than 1784) Supplemental information maintained by Janet White, her site is here http://jgenea.com/ The gist is that Johann Jacob Gressel apparently did not have a daughter named Elizabeth with either of his 2 wives (first Anna Barbara Mauer, then Anna Maria Handwerk). His 1771 will lists an oldest son Jacob Jr born 1764 (14 yrs old at 1778 guardianship hearing) along with youngest Bernhard but does not list Elizabeth and the list of children at jgenea.com does not list an Elizabeth. Therefore the Elizabeth listed as a daughter of Johann Rhinesmith/Rheinschmidt and wife of George Holder in the 1790 estate petition re: Johann Rhinesmith's estate seems to have been from the Rhinesmith side of the marriage, not the Hantwerk/Gressel side. We still don't know Elizabeth was from Johann R. and first wife (Anna Maria Unknown), or if Anna Maria Unknown had Elizabeth with someone before marrying Johann R. and brought her to the marriage."
