Note: udwig. There are gaps between Matilda and Esther and some sources list without documentation a daughter, Anna Maria, born in 1827. One source for the family of Christian David Ludwig is the 1850 census in which he is transcribed as 'Daniel' Ludwig due to the bad reading of the florid handwriting: Name Daniel Ludwig Event Type Census Event Year 1850 Event Place South Whitehall, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, United States Gender Male Age 44 Race White Birth Year (Estimated) 1806 Birthplace Pennsylvania Daniel Ludwig M 44 Pennsylvania Lida Ludwig F 43 Pennsylvania Matilda Ludwig F 19 Pennsylvania Susen Ludwig F 12 Pennsylvania Amalina Ludwig F 10 Pennsylvania Francis Ludwig M 7 Pennsylvania Mary Ludwig F 5 Pennsylvania Joseph Ludwig M 3 Pennsylvania CITING THIS RECORD "United States Census, 1850," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M4HT-KJ7 : accessed 13 September 2015), Daniel Ludwig, South Whitehall, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, United States; citing family 334, NARA microfilm publication M432 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.). The absence of 13 year old Esther being enumerated with this family could be explained by a 'Heddy' Ludwig living three doors down (on the same census page) with a family of undecipherable name (starting with R and ending with ser) age 14. This may or may not be the daughter of David and Lydia. If not, there seems no explanation for her non-appearance on the 1850 census but appearing on the 1860 census. This family is also found on the 1860 Pennsylvania census. Name David Ludwig Event Type Census Event Year 1860 Event Place South White Hall Township, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, United States Gender Male Age 53 Race White Birth Year (Estimated) 1807 Birthplace Pennsylvania David Ludwig M 53 Pennsylvania Lydia Ludwig F 52 Esther Ludwig F 23 Francis Ludwig M 17 Maryetta Ludwig F 14 Joseph Ludwig M 12 CITING THIS RECORD "United States Census, 1860," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MX5Q-12J : accessed 13 September 2015), David Ludwig, South White Hall Township, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, United States; from "1860 U.S. Federal Census - Population," database, Fold3.com (http://www.fold3.com : n.d.); citing p. 10, household ID 74, NARA microfilm publication M653 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 805,131. Christian David is also found on the 1830 census as C David Ludwig and the 1880 census as David Ludwig , with wife Lydia, living in South Whitehall. The birthplace of the children has been listed as South Whitehall due to the consistency of his residence in that township from 1830 to 1880. The source for the death date of Christian David Ludwig is an undocumented source on Rootsweb World Connect on Ancestry.com. The 1886 death was subsequently confimred by finding the Inventory papers for the estate of David Ludwig, file no. 6687. More on the content of these documents below under the notes of daughter Esther. David and Lydia are living alone without children under the surname 'Ludwick' on the 1870 census. Source Citation: Year: 1870; Census Place: South Whitehall, Lehigh, Pennsylvania; Roll: M593_1363; Page: 516B; Image: 262; Family History Library Film: 552862. The source for the death month and year for Lydia is the US Census Federal Mortality Schedule. Source Citation: National Archives and Records Administration (NARA); Washington, D.C.; Non-Population Census Schedules for Pennsylvania, 1850-1880: Mortality; Archive Collection: M1838; Archive Roll Number: 10; Census Year: 1879; Census Place: Salisbury, Lehigh, Pennsylvania; Page: 1 CHILDREN: The source for the marriage of Gideon and Matilda is an unsourced entry on Family Search and another unsourced entry on the Public Member Family Tree on Ancestry.com of wcludwig. The latter is a distant cousin whose carefully documented work I am familiar with. Sources are not always easy to add to Ancestry, nevertheless I have entered this marriage date as undocumented. Gideon and Matilda have several children on the 1860 and 1870 Lehigh County, Pennsylvania census. The source for the marriage of Francis and Elmina is Source Citation: Historical Society of Pennsylvania; Historic Pennsylvania Church and Town Records; Reel: 545. Source Information: Ancestry.com. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The source for the marriage of Joseph Ludwig and Isabella Nolf was originally an entry on the Public Member FamilyTree on Ancestry.com of wcludwig, a distant cousin. A further source is Source Citation: Historical Society of Pennsylvania; Historic Pennsylvania Church and Town Records; Reel: 545. Source Information: Ancestry.com. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Isabella is called Sybilla on this record. Esther is found on the 1860 census with the family, and as the notes above under her parents suggest, perhaps the 14 year old Heddy Ludwig living three doors down on the 1850 census is her. in 2014 an attempt was made to find mention of her with married or maiden name in the will of David Ludwig, but no will could be found, only a several paged Lehigh County Inventory, no. 6687, filed November 5, 1886. Subsequent research in 2015 has confirmed that Esther did indeed go by Hettie in later life and married Francis J Marks (Marcks). See notes under her own page. For sources for other children see under their own notes.
Note: This is probably an incomplete listing of the family of Christian David L
