The 1860 whereabouts of parents Jacob and Hester remains a mystery. As the children are living with each other and one minor is apprenticed out, Jacob and Hester may have both died before 1860. Daniel subsequently appears on the 1870 census in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania as a miller (it should be remembered that his father, Jacob Andreas, was a miller by trade), and born in 1845. Source Citation: Year: 1870; Census Place: Milton, Northumberland, Pennsylvania; Roll: M593_1384; Page: 41B; Image: 87; Family History Library Film: 552883. Daniel appears again in the 1880 census living as a border in the home of Richard Phipps. This is almost certainly the same Daniel, as his birthdate is 1845, there are no other Daniel Ludwigs close to that age in the 1880 census report born in Pennsylvania, and he has kept the occupation of miller, the same as his father, Jacob. This is the source for their marriage year as 1885 "United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MWVP-9SW : 15 July 2017), Daniel Ludwig in household of Richard Philips, Damascus, Wayne, Pennsylvania, United States; citing enumeration district ED 8, sheet 117B, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 1202; FHL microfilm 1,255,202. His birthdate is 1845, he is born in Pennsylvania and occupation is that of miller. Of interest is the age difference of 17 years between wife Mary and Daniel. When Daniel appeared on the 1880 census cited above as a border in the home of Richard Phipps there was a servant, Mary Hiller, also residing in the home. Her age is listed as 17 years younger than Daniel. At first I was reticent to connect his wife, Mary B., from the 1910 census (who is 17 years younger than Daniel) with Mary Hiller from the 1880 census. Upon finding a marriage record for a Mary B Hiller to Daniel Ludwig from Meg Bramwell on newFamilysearch.org, I have entered her name here as Mary B Hiller. Daniel Ludwig Head M 65 Pennsylvania Mary B Ludwig Wife F 48 Pennsylvania Daniel and Mary are also found on the 1900 Wayne County, Pennsylvania census, which is adjacent to Delaware County, New York. Daniel is listed on the record as 'David', but due to the proximity to Delaware County, his age being the same, Mary's age and birthplace being the same, and his occupation still as 'miller', I submit 'Daniel' is an error in entry. This is the source for the birth months of Daniel and Mary. Source Citation: Year: 1900; Census Place: Buckingham, Wayne, Pennsylvania; Page: 1; Enumeration District: 0109; FHL microfilm: 1241495. The informant was Mrs. Mary Ludwig, his occupation was miller, and the father's name was listed as Andrew Ludwig, using the modern form of Jacob's middle name, Andreas. As with his siblings death certificates, the name of the mother, Hester, was also left blank. Evidently, Hester had been forgotten by that time.
