Note: PARENTS: This may be an incomplete listing of the children of Johann Adam and Maria Elizabeth. The source for the marriage of Maria Elizabeth and Adam Schmetzer is their mention as a married couple in the Deed Book with an agreement between the widow and children of Franz Joseph Ludwig. Lehigh Co. Miscellaneous Deed Book #2, pp. 437-439: "Lehigh Co. Miscellaneous Deed Book #2, pp. 437-439 Agreement between the widow & children of Frantz Joseph Ludwig, deceased Date: 5 May 1832 Parties of the 1st Part: Abraham Ludwig, David Ludwig of South Whitehall Township Parties of the 2nd Part: Jacob Ludwig (by his Guardian Benjamin Ludwig), Joseph Weiss & Susannah his wife, Adam Smetzer & Elizabeth his wife, Henry Rinker & Sarah his wife; Susannah, Elizabeth and Sarah being daughters of Frantz Joseph Ludwig, deceased. Party of the 3rd Part: Ann Ludwig, widow and relict of Frantz Joseph Ludwig, deceased. Agreement: Whereas Frantz Joseph Ludwig, deceased, late father of Abraham Ludwig, David Ludwig, Jacob Ludwig, Susannah Weiss, Elizabeth Smetzer and Sarah Rinker and husband of Ann Ludwig, by his Last Will and Testatment..." The source for the exact date of the marriage for Adam and Maria Elizabeth is ‘Der Friedens Bote’ 4/12/1822 which states: "Adam Schmetzer of Salisbury to Miss Elisabeth Ludewig of South Whitehall on Sun., 14 days, Rev. Seidel." The source for the death of Maria Elizabeth is 'Der Friedens Bote’ 31 Aug. 1836 which states: "Maria Elisabeth Schmetzer of Salisbury, wife of Adam Schmetzer, died last Monday in 38th year, Rev. Jager" The sources for the exact date of the second marriage of Adam to Catharine are ‘Der Friedens Bote’ 13 Sep. 1837 and ‘Unabhaengiger Republikaner’ 20 Sep. 1837 which state: "Adam Schmetzer to Catharina Braun, both of Salisbury, last Sunday, Rev. Fuchs." Another source for the marriage/family is the 1850 Pennsylvania census, Source Citation: Year: 1850; Census Place: Salsburg, Lehigh, Pennsylvania; Roll: M432_792; Page: 10A; Image: 25. Two of his children from the first marriage, Francis and Sarah, are living at home. Catharine's age is listed here as 45 putting her birth year as 1805. This must be a mistake as her birth year is 1814-15 on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census. The family is also on the 1860 Salisbury, Lehigh census with wife Catharine and children Francis, Elmina, Charles D, Catharine, Emma J and Eliza at home. Lucinda Schmetzer and her husband Owen are also in the household. The sources for the death of Johann Adam are 'Der Friedens Bote’ 9/9/1868 and ‘Unabhaengiger Republikaner’ 9/9/1868 which state: "Adam Schmetzer of Salisbury died 9/2/1868, 70 years." This is the source for his 'abt. 1798' birth year. Catharine is a widow on the 1870 census with daughters Eliza Schmetzer and Lucinda Focht (without husband present) but with children. "United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MWNQ-T3J : accessed 30 November 2015), Catharine Smatzer, Salisbury, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, United States; citing enumeration district 195, sheet 371D, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 1147; FHL microfilm 1,255,147. The 1880 census lists Catharine as a widow. In the household are daughter Eliza, son in law Charles Fritz (without wife), and daughter Lucinda Focht, without husband, but with children. The source for the death of Catharine is the following: Lehigh Co. Deed Book #134, page 155 (copied) records the sale of the Adam Smetzer home in Salisbury Township held in Trust since 1858 until the death of wife Catharine on 22 Mar. 1889. Catharine was survived by 6 children and 2 grandchildren named in this Deed: Lucinda Focht James Smetzer Ella, wife of Ezekiel Fritz, deceased Charles Smetzer Emma, wife of William H. Williard Eliza Smetzer Catharine (now deceased), wife of James Butz, survived by two sons: Harry A.Butz & Wilson S.Butz CHILDREN: The source for the children of Adam and Maria is from Lehigh Co. Miscellaneous Deed Book #5, pp. 60-61: "Lehigh Co. Miscellaneous Deed Book #5, pp. 60-61 Letter of Attorney Grantors: Heirs of Anna Ludwig: David Ludwig and wife Lydia Abraham Ludwig and wife Anna JacobA. Ludwig and wife Esther Henry Rinker and his wife Sarah Susan Weiss Francis Smetzer Mary Smetzer Sarah Smetzer Grantee: Joseph Weiss, watchmaker of the Borough of Allentown Date: 3 Jun.1850 Description: Anna Ludwig, late of the Borough of Allentown, widow, had acquired in her lifetime a message piece of ground on the eastside of William St. in the Borough of Allentown, bounded on the west by William St., on the north by ground of Ludwig Wolf, on the east by a public alley and the south by grounds of Ludwig Wolf. It being 30 feet along William St. and 230 feet in depth. Anna Ludwig was survived by five children: David Ludwig, Abraham Ludwig, Jacob A. Ludwig, Susan S. wife of Joseph Weiss and Sarah wife of Henry Rinker also three grandchildren, the issue of her deceased daughter Elizabeth Smetzer: Francis Smetzer, Mary Smetzer and Sarah Smetzer. The Intestate laws of Pennsylvania allow this property to descend to the named children and grandchildren of Anna Ludwig. The listed heirs have agreed to sell the property and have appointed Joseph Weiss their attorney for that purpose. Recorded: 11 Mar.1851 Their approximate dates of birth of the children were extracted from the 1850 and 1860 Pennsylvania census. The month of birth for Mary Ann and her husband, Christian Lewis, comes from the 1900 Pennsylvania census. There is a final child, Eliza, listed on the 1860 census on which the family name is spelled Smetzer. In addition to this there is a Catharine listed at age 19. This must be the wife of Francis (see below). Another option is that it could have been an alternate name for daughter Lucinda, who was also born around 1841/42. Yet on this census record Lucinda is living with her parents and husband as Lucinda Focht (See below). I believe Catharine Ann is the same daughter as Hetean on the 1850 Lehigh County census. They are both the only daughter born in 1840, and Hetean is probably a German diminutive of Catharine Ann. In his Estate File in Lehigh County the only heirs are each one of his surviving siblings (sisters under married names), and Wilson S and Harry A Butz, likely sons of his deceased sister Catharine Ann who married James Butz, and was likely deceased by the time of the settling of this Estate. As there are no other heirs listed beside his siblings (or two nephews) it is implied that he had no children or wife, and thus may have never married.
