The following information, extracted from his obituary about his origins in Pennsylvania, further indicate that James, the son of Adam, and James who died in Bartholomew County are the same man.

JAMES SMETZER
Funeral services for the late James Smetzer, 80 years old, who died at his home in Union township, Tuesday afternoon, will be held from St. John's church at 11 o'clock Friday morning, conducted by Rev. G. Emerson Harsh, of the English Lutheran church of this city. Burial will be made in an adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Smetzer came to Bartholomew County from Pennsylvania in 1856 and had lived in Union township for forty years. He is survived by his widow and the following children: Frank, Charles, George, Katie, and Laura Smetzer.
