a. Note: rriages, 1850-1952," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K8DN-ZP5 : accessed 7 April 2016), Paul E Ussher and Gracia M Schwerin, 20 Apr 1908; citing Orange, California, United States, county courthouses, California; FHL microfilm 1,290,100.
Grandma is listed as age 25. She must have lied and taken four years off her age.
The source for the birth and death of Paul Ussher is Texas, Deaths, 1890-1976, Film Number: 2138242 Digital Film Number: 4027133 Image Number: 3154 Reference Number: CN11739.
Another source for the birth information of Paul Ussher is World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918, Source Citation: Registration State: Kansas; Registration County: Butler; Roll: 1643426.
This Butler County, Kansas document is also the source for Paul's second wife, who is listed as 'nearest relative- Daphne Ussher (wife) 111 1/2 West Locust, El Dorado, Butler, Kansas.
At present (2014) neither Paul or Daphne Ussher can be found on the 1920, 30 or 40 census reports. A possible reason for not finding three decades of census reports is that the surname is spelled in a convoluted way on the report, and it has not been found yet on an online search.
The source for the birth and death information for Daphne (surname unknown) is her Texas Death Certificate. The names of parents are 'unknown.' "Texas, Deaths, 1890-1976," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K3Q5-LNY : accessed 22 Jan 2014), Daphne Ussher, 10 Apr 1956; citing certificate number 19762, State Registrar Office, Austin; FHL microfilm 2114668.
This certificate is certainly that of Daphne Ussher, the wife of Paul Ussher. The similarity of age, and the uncommon two names, her death in Texas, their most recent joint residence, all point to the same lady. This must be the case in spite of the certificate stating she was widowed, which was not the case, as Paul lived until 1967. It is likely that Paul and Daphne may have been estranged as his 1967 death certificate lists him as divorced. After the first written record of Daphne Ussher on the 1917 World War I Draft Registration cited above, we find Paul and Daphne living in Texas as man and wife on the Fort Worth City Directory of 1923 and 1924. Later we find Daphne living alone in Brownsville, Texas in the 1948 and 1951 City Directory, living in a set of apartments and later the Rio Grande Hotel respectively. This is the only current indication that the couple may have been estranged. The source for the information provided on the death certificate under Informant is "Welfare Records." This might be the reason for the inaccuracy of her being listed as widowed, or if there was an estrangement, she may have preferred that status.
It is on this basis that I connect the death certificate for Daphne Ussher with the wife of Paul.
