Note: here is no marriage record between 1870 and 1874 in Lawrence County for a Nancy or Nancy E Moore and she is listed as single on the Lawrence, Ohio County Deaths 1868-1938 cited at the end of these notes. It is unclear if the two small children, Victor M age 3 and Mary C age two months, on the 1870 Lawrence County census are the children or grandchildren of Lewis and Delilah Moore. Based on the age of Delila they are probably grandchildren. Some sources claim they are illegitimate children of daughter Nancy E Moore. They are referred to ten years later on the 1880 census, after Nancy's death, as the brother and sister of Nancy's brother, Isaac F Moore, who is head of house with his widowed mother, Delilah. If they were illegitimate, calling them siblings would be a great way to cover. Regarding the children being the illegitimate children of Nancy, I received the following e mail from Teri Allred on Ancestry.com in November, 2014: 'My grandmother lived to be 106. She was about 45 when her grandfather, Jarvis Cane Moore, died in the 1940s. He was pretty old, too. Jarvis was Lewis and Delilah. Anyway, I was puzzled by census records saying Delilah was the mother of those two children so my cousins and grandmother are the sources for the mother of those two children. I don't think we found the verification in birth records but will check. Thanks for contacting me.' The source for the death of Nancy E Moore is Lawrence, Ohio County Deaths 1868-1938. On her 1874 death she is listed as age 34, single, and born in Fayette, Lawrence County which is a mistake, as she was actually born in Virginia. There are other examples of my ancestors from Lawrence County being listed in the Lawrence, Ohio County Death records as dying in Lawrence County when it is documented that they were born in Virginia. One example is William Martin, born 1794. He is listed as being born in Aid, Lawrence, Ohio when he was born in [Bedford County], Virginia, as per the 1850 and 1860 census records. Moore, 07 Apr 1874; citing Death, Fayette Township, Lawrence, Ohio, United States, source ID v 1 p 114, County courthouses, Ohio; FHL microfilm 317,746.
Note: Nancy E remained single as she is on the 1870 census and died in 1874. T
