Notes
a. Note: ions documented are an almost certain brother, Thomas Johnson, and a 'perhaps' sister, Margaret Johnston [sp] (who married into the Martin family on this tree). Even his birth state is in question. He is listed as Ohio born on the 1860 and 1870 Lawrence County census' but on the 1910 and 1920 Lawrence County census' his daughter, Nancy Ellen Johnson Moore, gave his birthplace as Virginia. It should not be overlooked, as Virginia was origin for most of the early Lawrence County families. Williams' birth record and parentage maybe never be discovered due to the surname Johnson, his common first name, and that the part of Ohio and West Virginia in which these families resided in the 1810's and 20's were very much American frontier.
  PARENTS:
  William Johnson's age is listed as 43 on the 1860 census (1817), 51 in the 1870 census ( 1819), and 64 in the 1880 census (1816).
The sources for the initial reconstruction of the families of the first marriages of Serilda and William, and their subsequent marriage to each other is family are the 1850, 60, 70, 80 Lawrence County census records. Other sources include death certificate for Serilda Martin Johnson, and Lawrence County, Ohio births, film 41147, pt 1 and 4. The date of death for Serilda Martin Johnson is 22 April, 1922 on the Ohio Death Index, Ohio. Division of Vital Statistics. Death Certificates and index, December 20, 1908-December 31, 1953. State Archives Series 3094. Ohio Historical Society, Ohio. Her Ohio State death certificate, however, lists 22 September. The source for the death of William Johnson is the Lawrence County, Ohio death book, held in the Lawrence County Courthouse in Ironton.
The initial source for the date of William's first marriage to Mahala is the Barbara Boone William Johnson family tree on ancestry.com. Further evidence for the existence of this family and the 'bef. 1839' marriage date for William and Mahala is the 1860 Lawrence County, Ohio census.   Name: Wilcomb Johnson
 Event Type: Death
 Event Date: 17 Feb 1921
 Event Place: Guen, Scioto, Ohio
 Gender: Male
 Age: 68
 Race: W
 Birth Date: 04 Dec 1843
 Birth Year (Estimated): 1853
 Father's Name: William Johnson
 Birth place: unknown
 Mother's Name: Mahala Wilson
 Birth place: Lawrence County, Ohio
For many years Mahala's maiden name was not known or listed. I give her the maiden name of Wilson today after careful study and only minor reservations. No marriage record for William and Mahala has been found in Virginia, Kentucky, or the more logical state of Ohio, which would list her maiden name. This is frustrating and unusual as marriage records were kept in Lawrence County since just before 1820, as illustrated by many documented in this tree. In fact nothing comes up on a nationwide search for a marriage between a William Johnson and Mahala ca. 1838. I have, therefore, checked the state death certificates of the children of William and Mahala Johnson
  1. The death certificates of William Allen Johnson (died 1935, informant his daughter Eva) and Mahala Johnson McMahon (died 1930, informant husband Nick McMahon) both list Mahala's name and birthplace as 'unknown'. See note under no. 3 regarding Nick McMahon as informant.
  2. The earliest death certificate of son Welcome Johnson lists his mother's maiden name as WILSON. The informant on this 1921 document was Mahala Johnson McMahon, Mahala's grandaughter. Document source cited above.
  3. The 1935 death certificate for Julia Johnson lists it as KNIGHT. The informant here is Nick McMahon, the husband of the previous informant, Mahala Johnson McMahon. Mahala J McMahon had died in 1930 and her husband Nick was not a part of this family. Listing Knight as the maiden name may have been a remembrance of the large number of MCKNIGHTS who intermarried with the family of Mahala. Mahala (WILSON'S) husband, William Johnson married after Mahala's early death second Serilda Martin McKnight, who brought many McKnight children into the marriage. 1935 informant Nick McMahon may have gotten this name mixed up with the maiden name of his wife's grandmother. I think Nick's wife Mahala Johnson, got it right 14 years earlier on the 1921 death certificate of Welcome.
It is interesting that in 1935 Nick McMahon gave, on the death certificate of his wife's sister Julia, Mahala's name as 'Mahala Knight', but on the 1930 death certificate of his wife Mahala Johnson McMahon, gave Mahala's name as 'unknown'.
Some careless folks have given Mahala the maiden name of Webb, due to the fact that an 84 year old James Webb, listed as 'gardener', is residing with the family on the 1860 census cited above.
The source for the death year of Mahala is her shared headstone with William in the Ross cemetery in Lawrence County, Ohio as listed onFindaGrave.com Her name has been wrongly entered as Mahala WEBB Johnson. See notes above. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/99700663/mahala-johnson
There is a Civil War Draft Registration Card for William's supposed brother Thomas Johnson, his sons Thomas Johnson Jr. and William Johnson, and William's son, Andrew. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA); Washington, D.C.; Consolidated Lists of Civil War Draft Registration Records (Provost Marshal General's Bureau; Consolidated Enrollment Lists, 1863-1865); Record Group: 110, Records of the Provost Marshal General's Bureau (Civil War); Collection Name: Consolidated Enrollment Lists, 1863-1865 (Civil War Union Draft Records); ARC Identifier: 4213514; Archive Volume Number: 4 of 4.
There is a mis-transcription of the headstones from the Ross cemetery In Lawrence County LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP CEMETERIES LA-22
PAGE 19. This gives the impression that William Sr, born 1816, was a Civil War veteran. After his named is transcribed 'Co. C, 5th W. Va Inf.' This, however, is on the headstone of the 'other' William Johnson in the cemetery, Thomas' son and the nephew William Sr., born 1816. On visiting the cemetery the stones are sitting in a row and these are the names of people left to right. The stones are sitting in a row and these are the names of people left to right in a photo I took - William and Mahala, Emily, Sally, Welcome, and last William on whose stone is marked 'Co. C, 5th W. Va Inf.'
The source for the marriage of William and Serilda is "Kentucky, County Marriages, 1797-1954," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5PX-LKG : accessed 21 May 2017), William Johnson and Serilda Mcknight, 04 Oct 1866; citing Boyd, Kentucky, United States, Madison County Courthouse, Richmond; FHL microfilm 344,011.
  CHILDREN:
Serilda Martin's children by James McKnight on the subsheet, have been given "after 1900" or "after 1910" death dates as all of her children except one (Emily McKnight) were living in 1900, and William McKnight has been found on the 1910 census.
William Johnson's child, Emily, by first wife Mahala, never married, as her name is Emily Johnson on her headstone in the Ross cemetery.
The birthdate of John Johnson has caused some confusion. The above mentioned microfilm, Lawrence County, Ohio births, film 41147, pt 1 and 4 has Nancy born 24 May 1872 and John W. 18 Jun 1870, which is in conflict with Nancy's death certificate, which lists her as being born in 1870, most likely an error. The 1870 census also lists John as older than Nancy Ellen and lists John as born in 1870 and Nancy born in 1873. To further complicate the matter, the 1900 census lists John's birthday as June 1871. I have given John the birth year of 1871 and Nancy born a year later, in 1872. The dates of death and other related statistics for John Johnson and wife Sarah Crawford come from their Ohio State Death Certificates. Their marriage date comes from undocumented source on newfamilysearch.com.
Subsequent to the writing of this paragraph a confirmation of John's 18 Jun 1870 birth was found on Ancestry.com. Ohio, Births and Christenings Index, 1800-1962 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2011. Original data:"Ohio Births and Christenings, 1821-1962." Index. FamilySearch, Salt Lake City, Utah, 2009, 2011. Index entries derived from digital copies of original and compiled records.
The birthdate of Nancy comes from her Ohio State Death Certificate. It is in conflict with her birthdate listed on Ohio, Births and Christenings Index, 1800-1962 which gives 24 May 1872. I have used the birth record for her date of birth.
The source for the family of Byrdine Johnson is the 1930 Scioto County, Ohio census report. His birth record is from the 1900 Lawrence County census record and marriage to Lyda Smeltzer is from the Lawrence County Marriage Books.
According to my grandmother Ethel Marie Moore Rutman, the son Syrdine, who was her uncle, never married. This is confirmed by the 1900 and 1910 Colorado census, which lists him as single.
The source for the single status of Julia Johnson (from William's marriage to Mahala) is the 1930 Lawrence County, Ohio census in which she is listed as living with her sister Mahala McMahon as Julia Johnson. Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Upper, Lawrence, Ohio; Roll: 1827; Page: 3A; Enumeration District: 21; Image: 756.0; FHL microfilm: 2341561. The death and burial information comes from her Ohio State Death Certificate, no. 34680. Her birth year seems to be a bit off from the census records. I have used her birth day, but as the informant may not have known her exact age, I have used the birth year from all the census records.
Death certificate for Mahala, daughter from William's first marriage, says birth is 28 Feb 1868. This must be incorrect as the census records show that she was the daughter of Mahala and not Serilda, and Mahala was deceased in 1868. I have used the 28 Feb as her birthday, but used the more logical 1861 (from the census records) as her birth year. Dates for William's first wife, Mahala, are from headstone in Ross cemetery, Lawrence Co, Ohio. Sources for the death dates of children of Mahala and William- Emily, Welcome, and Sara- are from headstones in the Ross cemetery, Lawrence Co, Ohio.
The source for the aft 1930 death of Mahala Johnson McMahon and bef. 1930 death of Nicholas McMahon is the 1930 Lawrence County, Ohio census. Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Upper, Lawrence, Ohio; Roll: 1827; Page: 3A; Enumeration District: 21; Image: 756.0; FHL microfilm: 2341561.
The source for the marriage of Welcome Johnson and Margaret Hammond is the Lawrence County, Ohio Marriage Book 12, p. 364.
