Note: o census. The 1900 census, while it lists a more complete family has many errors. Welcome's name is transcribed as Wiles, his birth date is listed as 1848 instead of 1843, Minnie's birthdate is listed as April 1884 while her birth certificate lists it as April 1885, and Nancy's birth date is listed as July 1878, where she is listed as one year old on the 1880 census. Andrew's birth year extracted from the 1900 census may also be viewed with care. This census lists William Blankenship, the husband of Maria Elizabeth, living in the house as son in-law with three Blankenship children. It is on this basis that I have listed the death of Maria Elizabeth as 'bef. 1900.' The 1900 census, cited below, lists Margaret as the mother of eight children and that only four were living in 1900. These four would have to be Nancy, Minnie, Andy, and even though as a sixteen year old he does not appear with the family on the 1900 census, the fourth would be Charles E. The current list of six children is based on both those present on the 1880 and 1900 census reports and the Lawrence County Birth Records. Two children are unaccounted for who perhaps never had their births or deaths recorded and must have died prior to 1900. Maria Elizabeth died as per her widowed husband living with Welcome's family on this 1900 census. Elmer is the fourth child who died as per his 1891 birth record from the Lawrence County Births and his non appearance on the 1900 census. This leaves Minnie, Nancy, Charles E and Andrew alive in 1900. Charles E is not on the 1900 census but must be one of the surviving children to make the math work. As per Welcome's 1921 obituary cited below only Nancy and Minnie survived his death. The source for the marriage of Welcome Johnson and Margaret Hammond is the Lawrence County, Ohio Marriage Book 12, p. 364. The sources for the birth year of Margaret are the 1880 and 1900 Lawrence County census between which there is a discrepancy. On the 1880 census Margaret is listed as age 39 (born 1841) and her age on the 1900 census (see above) is 45 (born July 1855). A difference of 15 years! I suspect she should be listed as age 29 rather than 39 on the 1880 census making her birth year on that record 1851, but that is just a hunch. No death record or obituary has been found for Margaret. Her death between 1900 and 1920 has been searched for in Lawrence and Scioto Counties on FamilySearch and I have looked through the Scioto Co. deaths on microfilm from 1900 to 1903 but did not find her. 1903 to 1920 should be searched. No obituaries were found for Margaret Johnson in the Ironton Tribune at the Briggs Library in Ironton. Due to Maria being a minor, Welcome Johnson had to sign as father. The source for the 'bef. 1921' death dates of Welcome's sons Andrew and Charles (Elmer died before 1900) is on account of the statement in his Feb 17, 1921 Ironton Register obituary, "He is survived by two daughters." The non mention of Andrew and Charles implies a pre Feb 1921 death for both of them. Mother Margaret is listed on the 1900 census as the mother of eight children, only four of whom are living in 1900. The 1900 survivors would, as mentioned above, have to be Nancy, Minnie, Andy and Charles. Perhaps 16 year old Charles non appearance on the census was because he was 'out somewhere.' Both Charles and Andrew were certainly deceased by 1921 as per the obituary of their father.
